Fix for Sirius radio and for the internet being really slow to connect
Hello fellow Vista Users, Just spent an intersting week getting my third Vista laptop working. The first two were really simple, and all three are various versions of the Toshiba Satellite. This third one was really tough to resolve two specific problems. Firefox connected to the internet very fast. But IE7, Google Chrome, Vista Help & Support (Yes, Online Support is selected), and Windows Live Messanger were really slow to connect. Could not get Sirius internet radio to work under either IE or Firefox It turned out that my problem was being caused by a bogus WPAD server address. I have my router configured so that I end up with a DNS search suffix of dyndns.org. That may be something I need to change, but to date, it had not caused me any problems, and when I set it up that way back in about 2000, it seemed to help me with some Linux issues. Anyway, what I ended up doing is going into Internet options, Connections, LAN Settings, and unselecting `Automatically Detect Settings`. Somehow, I had turned that on - not sure what I did to turn that one. That fixed my problem - both slow internet conenct, and Sirius were resolved. Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/937151for a good place to start figuring out the whole WPAD things - it was new to me. What tweaked me was that I sparked up Wireshark, and noticed I was asking my DNS (happens to be provided by Rogers) to resolve a name of wpad.dyndns.org. The DNS was returning an address of 198.168.0.11, which happens to be the same private network address I use, and I imagine is likely the way most people build their private network since most routers seem to configured with the `16-bit block` private network as the default. Anyway, what was happending was everytimeI started something that was using the MS internet options, it would try a bunch of times to start a TCP session with 198.168.011, so it could do the WPAD thing. Once they all timed out, then it would just go ahead and assume no proxy, and I would connect OK. But, it took 25 seconds for this to happen. OnceI turned off `Automatically Detect Setting`, connection was under 2 seconds! That is more like it! I had done a few other things while trying to get Sirius Radio working, like making sure all the WMP DLLs were registered, but none of that seemed to make any diference. Once I made this change, Sirius worked as well - under IE7 only - I thought it used to work under Firefox on my old XP machine, but can not remember for sure. Likely I need a WPM plugin for Firefox - if I figure that out I will add to this port - but I am fine with IE7 for Sirius. Hope this saves someone else some time - I was getting pretty frustrated when I finally figured this out!
