First non-cached Windows 7 logon slowness.
Hi Guys, I'm running a network with Windows 2008 R2 on the server side, Windows 7 Enterprise on the client side. All is well, however I'm really not impressed with how long Windows 7 clients take to logon when the user has first logged onto the computer. I have a \\domain\netlogon\default user.v2\ profile setup as per the Microsoft guide here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973289 and http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2009/10/29/configuring-default-user-settings-full-update-for-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx However, it can take anything from 30seconds to just under a minute seconds to logon when a user first logs onto a computer that they haven't before. It will run through all of the "Folder redirection/Internet explorer branding" and then hold on "Preparing your desktop". Second logon is fine (5/15 seconds) as I presume it uses the cached profile on the local drive. It may not sound like much, but our users rarely use the same computer twice (Education sector) so it can be pretty annoying to have to wait so long considering that Windows XP logon time was much lower. Now, if I cheat and throw the microsoft guide out the Window and copy up an existing profile without using the copyprofile setting in sysprep i.e manually, logon returns to a much nicer 10/15 seconds. However as per http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2009/10/29/configuring-default-user-settings-full-update-for-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx This breaks various settings, i.e when users click on a library Windows gets really confused and takes 5/15 seconds to show the library which is annoying, kinda like this http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/ddd6b40c-7c06-447c-b397-20fff6982e0a The windows deployment guide link above recommends against this as well. Am I stuck with kind of logon speed? I assume it takes so long as Windows is building the users new profile, but it's been driving me crazy since we installed Windows 7. Thanks

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. How big is your profile? After checking this issue, the major problem is that the first logon is slower than normal logon. Based on my research, when a new user is logging in, the desktop and folder structure will be prepared in the background and some user settings are applied, so this takes some time. At the second logon, it will go faster because the settings/folder structure already exists. Alex Zhao TechNet Subscriber Support in forum.
