Firewall is turning itself off at start up then turning itself on
I have Windows firewall and I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 and the firewall is turning itself off after startup then turns itself on. When I try the firewall back on through the control panel, there's a message that reads: "due to and unidentied problem , Windows cannot display firewall setting. Then after 2 - 3 minutes, the firewall turns back on. I've done some research about the firewall problem. On one website it said that I may have marlware. I've done scans (Also in safe mode with norton, windows defender, spybot, and marlwarebytes. But nothing. Anyone know what I can do about the firewall? 1 person needs an answerI do too

You mentioned Norton. Most of the Norton products have their own firewall component which will correctly disable the Windows Firewall. You don't ever want two firewalls running at the same time. Look in your Norton program to see. If it has a firewall component, use it and turn off the Windows Firewall.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I have Norton AntiVirus and far as I can tell a firewall didn't come with it.

I haven't seen a version of NAV since 2003 that didn'thave a firewall component. Suggest you contact their tech support.http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/index.html -Symantec tech support http://community.norton.com/norton/ -Norton forum MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

You could Contact Symantec Support and ask them to help you. Also update Windows and run defragnment and clean up. Try to uninstall unwanted programs and startup. If problem did NOT resolved then contact support:support.microsoft.comAlso try to update Norton and run full system scan.

I was on the norton forums and a poster told me that norton antivirus didn't have a firewall, it had something called intrusion protection. The thread is below. http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NAV2009-and-Windows-Firewall/m-p/33590/highlight/true#M14127

The "Intrusion Protection" or similarly-named feature is a firewall and therefore your computer is behaving as designed. If you use the Norton feature, leave the Windows Firewall off.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Intruction Protection is Different with Windows Firewall. I guess that you should turn on Windows Firewall as long as Norton Anti-Virus Did NOT come with Firewall. I also recommend to do recheck that go to Control Panel and open Security Center and see when Windows Firewall is off , it will show Norton or Another Firewall or it become red. Norton should show as Anti-Virus but In Firewall I thing you should use Windows Firewall as long as Norton Anti-Virus don't have any firewall . Check Windows Security Center to see what it detect as Firewall.

I'm sorry but this is incorrect. Norton Antivirus products have come with a firewall component since right after their 2003 edition. They may not use the word "firewall" - i.e., Intrusion Protection (whichyes , acts as a firewall) or I-can't-remember-the-name-that-far-back-Protection - but theseare firewall components nonetheless and willcorrectly disable the Windows Firewall. Now of course I can't guarantee the OP that his/her computer is virus/malware-free because I haven't seen it in person, but it would seem that this part of his/her question is answered. If the OP wants to be really sure of the state of the computer, s/he will need to take it to someone skilled who can actually take a look at the machine in person. This person should be a reputable local professional, not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place (who will just try to sell him/her something else).MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Intruction Detection is Different with Firewall. It did NOT come with program control but it will monitor by behavior to detect intriution. I ask user to check Windows Security Center , it will show that whether Norton come with Firewall or NOT.
