Firewall is off and doesn't turn on-Windows 7
Hi there! My windows firewall cannot start and it's causing me problems. I go to Control Panel, then to Systems Security and Windows firewall and try to turn it on. But when I do so (by pressing the button called "Use recommended settings")a message box is displayed with the following message: Can somebody please help?!! This has also caused my antivirus (Mcafee) to stop working properly. Thank you for your help! :)

I would suggest you contact Mcafee antivirus and get your antivirus running correctly first and get a good system scan run on your machine.:P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. The answer is always 42, or reboot.

Here's a similar thread on Microsoft Answers: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/windows-firewall-cant-change-some-of-your-settings/2679690e-c375-4232-ae45-404374386635 Quoting the most helpful reply from there, it says: "When was the last time you were able to change the firewall settings? Welcome to Microsoft Answers! Did you make any changes to the computer recently? What antivirus software is installed on you computer? Check for the service for Windows Firewall Service if it is started or not. 1. Click on Start 2. In the start Search box type Services 3. Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type. Windows firewall Started Automatic\Manual. Base filtering engine Started Automatic\Manual. Windows firewall autorization driver Started Automatic\Manual. Also check the dependency services that are required for Windows Firewall Service to run. To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab." Please revert back here if checking the above settings show no sign/cause of the problem. Hope it helps! Kunal D Mehta - a Windows Server Enthusiast | I'm on facebook.com/serverbaba

Thank you for your help! :) Sir, Please Try running the following commands if SFC /SCANNOW did not resolve the issue with the Windows Firewall: 1. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator. To do this, type CMD in Start Search from the Start Menu. Right click on the result and choose "Run as Administrator". 2. Run now the following command lines: a. netsh advfirewall reset b. net start mpsdrv c. net start bfe d. net start mpssvc e. regsvr32 firewallapi.dll 3. Confirm any boxes that comes up by clicking OK. The result on the last entry should say that it succeeded. 4. Reboot the system. Regards, MCP | MCTS | MCITP

What do you do if: a. fails because wshelper.dll cannot be loaded d. and e. failed because the dependency service or group failed to start My computer also fails to properly start Windows when it gets shut down, but I'm hoping that fixing the firewall might be step 1 in getting things fixed. Any other suggestions?
