Firewall Failure on Windows 7
My first experience with Windows 7 64 bits...After adjusting Windows 7 Firewall to it's highest security level, the Gibson Research firewall leak test demonstrated that Windows 7 firewall failed to prevent breeching. I downloaded Zone Alarms free firewall and that was successful in plugging the leak, however, it seems that Zone Alarm was not compatible with 64bit OS and my computer was freezing upon startup! I am also running Microsoft Security Essentials which does not seem to contain any independent firewall settings. I have uninstalled Zone Alarm and now remain with only a leaky Windows 7 firewall. Any advise???

If you’re a safe surfer, using other malware ’trappers’, you have nothing to be concerned about. However, if you have a cavalier approach, you know the consequences.

Hi, Windows 7 also has a test application, Action Center. If there is any leak, it will be detected and the notification will pop up. If not, we usually consider that the system is safe and we need not modify anything. At this stage, I suggest you restore the Windows Firewall settings to default and check whether everything is fine. Meanwhile, regarding the report from the third party application, please contact the manufacturer for further assistance about the reported leak. Thanks, Novak

Please detail the "leak" it didn't block. It may just be some small little thing that doesn't really matterMy idea of a party is a virtualization server and a room of TechNet DVDs

Here is the link for the Gibson Research leak test.http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htmUp until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't used Vista or Windows 7. And this particular "Leak Test" was originally developed for XP! But it seems pretty straight on and applicaple for any OS! I had previously used Microsoft Live One Care with my Windows XP Pro and that was successful in blocking any leaks, when tested. I had also used Zone Alarm free firewall which was always rock solid. So now with my new Windows 7, I am using Microsoft Essentials and that doesn't seem to block it. As well, the built in Window 7 firewall doesn't seem to block it either. I have been very fortunate over the years in preventing any actual breech of my privacy by keeping in tune with my protective services. So once this "Leak Test" showed that my computer twice failed, it was my obligation to confirm what this really means. I did download Zone Alarm onto my Window 7 laptop, and it now once again passed the test. But my computer was freezing up and it appeared to clear up after unloading Zone Alarm. To the best of my guess, Zone Alarm was not compatible with 64 bit OS! So now I wonder how to pass the test without acquiring a different Anti Virus containing an independent firewall such as Norton or the full version of Zone Alarm (which is apparentley compatible with 64 bit OS)! Maybe I should be consulting Microsoft Essentials over this question. Thanks for the input...

It looks like it's just testing to see if your firewall allows outbound traffic. If you haven't configured your Windows firewall to block it there's no reason why it wouldn't let it through. Many would argue that once a program runs on your machine your security has already been broken. My idea of a party is a virtualization server and a room of TechNet DVDs
