Files corrupted after moving to a dir with long name
So I decided to move a whole bunch of videos and pictures and reorganize them in the same drive. I moved them all to a really long directory name and recently became aware that Windows 7 limits the directory name + filename to 260 characters or something. Unfortunately for me, Windows did not give an error or warning when moving all the files and successfully completed the move operation. Now, any files in the long directory + names that exceeded the 260 limit are corrupted, I can't open, rename, delete, move, or copy them. Please help! I want to either rename them, or recover them to a different destination where I can rename them there.

My favorite general-purpose file recovery program is Recuva from Piriform. This program is free and has helped many. Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

I like "Unstoppable File Copier" from Roadkil.net when I have file copy problems. However, I can't remember if I've used it before on the 260 limit issue. My idea of a party is a virtualization server and a room of TechNet DVDs

the windows API has a 260 limit on file names. this is for backwards compatability and causes a real pain on may occasions. the issues is not that the files are corrupt but that the OS cannot access the file address. so assuming that you have something like: c:\[really long folder path that is < 260]\MyMovies\ To get around this you can share out the folder (or parent folder) and then creating a mapped drive to it. you should be able to access the files by navigating to x:\MyMoves Assumming that the mapped drive is 'X:' and that the folder that you shared where you movies are is called 'MyMovies' Hope this helps
