File sharing with a Mac
My home network has a New Macbook, an HP desktop with XP and an oldish Vaio, now with W7.A new Belkin N1 router is connected to the XP, as is an HP printer. It uses WPA2 encryption. The Mac can see the Xp and W7.The XP can see the Mac and W7.The W7 can see the XP but it cannot see the Mac.I have set the <Local Security Policy><Local Policies><Security Options><LAN Management Authentication Level>on the W7 computer to "Use LM andNTLM and NTLMv2 session security if negotiated".Is this correct or should it be left at NTLMv2 only? The Mac is setup for AFP and SMB file sharing and printer sharing. Not for FTP.Any help would be welcome.

I have found some good advice and a lot that is out-of-date or just plain wrong. It seems that changing LAN Management Authentication to reduce security levels is a red herring.Mine is set back to "NTLMv2 only"Also I have set the W7 machine to use the Home Network feature. (Some advise the contrary.)Here are a couple of good links...Networking Windows 7 with older versions of Windowshttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/033c418b-1096-4df7-bfad-fd3d431f3cd5Getting Leopard and Windows to play nicehttp://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=Operating+Systems&articleId=9113540&taxonomyId=89&pageNumber=1I still can't get Windows 7 to access the Mac. The other direction works fine using SMB file sharing. Now the XP machine can see all of the Mac, I mean ALL, including the entire contents of the hard disk. This maybe because the XP and Mac have the same user name and password. On the Mac, I tried changing the access permissions to allow hard disk access only by administrators and set public access to "Nobody".The result was four hours of grey startup screens and agonising about re-installing the OS.Then I found this answer. Oh bliss! To reset Mac Hard Disk Permissionshttp://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8736499&#8736499I'm now a bit reluctant to try other solutions. Has anybody else had more luck?

Hi Mark,I shall write some "comments" in a while. The reason this thread died a death was because several other people subsequently posted similar questions and maybe in a more understandable fashion. eg:Windows 7 to access data mac OS sharesSince unchecking 128 bit encryption on my windows 7 computer, to see the mac, I still have the problem that all the mac folders are visible, not just the public ones.(This was already the case with my XP computer but I thought it was because I was using the same user name as on the mac. This is not the case on the windows 7 computer).Could Microsoft and Apple please sort out this security problem between them, if just for a simple home user like me:)
