File sharing on a home network with Vista
I have a sharing problem that has been driving me crazy for weeks now.I have a main computer running Vista Ultimate in my office at home. On this computer I have all my multimedia files set on different drives or in some cases partitions on drives. Example: Music, Videos, Pictures, all on separate partitions. My second machine upstairs is also running Vista Ultimate. When I set the partitions to sharing, the partition can be seen from upstaits but when you try to open it is says that I dont have permission, yet when shared I set it to everyone. Back at my main computer, if I set one of the sundireories to sharing, it can be openned upstairs. What is the difference in proceedure between sharing the root or sub directories of the root.

Hi, Thank you for your post. Sharing the root directories may cause some potential issues. For system security, we recommend to share the folders instead of the root directories. (For more information, please refer to the section Administrative Shares and Sharing the Root of a Drive of the following document). File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx If you still want to share the root directly, please disable the sharing and reconfigure the sharing according the steps of the section Administrative Shares and Sharing the Root of a Drive. After the steps, please also go to the partitions Properties, check both Sharing and Security settings, and make sure that you have assigned the Full-Control permissions to Everyone. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
