File server in workgroup shows up sometimes
I have a local network of 5 Windows Vista Business, 4 Windows 7 Professional, 2 Windows Server 2003, 3 Mac OS X and 4 iPhone in a workgroup configuration. One of the Windows Servers is configured as a file server and the other is used as a backup server. My users never have a problem viewing other workstations (i.e. Windows Vista Business, Windows 7 Professional or Mac OS X clients) however, more often than not, the Windows Server configured as a file server is invisible to them -they are not able to view it and the files its file shares by navigating to the Network window and clicking on the server name. The Windows 2003 file server is accessible via mapped drives or by using UNC, but it would be nice if it would also be accessible from the Network window.

Hi, If you can access the files via mapped drives or by using UNC. I suspect that maybe you already disabled the Network Discovery. If so, you may try to enable it. Please refer the following steps: In Vista and Windows 7 Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the Windows XP Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard. If the issue persists, I suggest you to check if the computer is hidden from network, please refer the following link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349797(WS.10).aspx Meantime, please check whether you enable the third party firewall, If so, please disable it temporarily to have a try. I would like to advise you that maybe you can’t access the file of MacOS via Network Window, because it have the other protocol to do it, I can’t ensure it will appear in the Network list. But you can access it via IP address.
