File Types list is empty
Using Windows 7, while checking for help on how to search the contents of files, I have discovered that the File Types list is empty. That is, I opened Indexing Options | Advanced - and there are two tab (Index Settings and File Types). The File Types list is empty with nothing showing. As far as I know, this was never populated. Because I've never changed any settings for indexing or searching. I found this out because when I was trying to search for phrases within files, no results were showing.Any ideas why the list is empty and how I can "fix" it?Thanks,Tom.

Mine is populated with what I assume is every file extention registered on my system. That is, there's a lot.I know this isn't exactly targetted, but have you tried the 'Troubleshoot search and indexing' link at the bottom of the Indexing Options control panel? If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle. If it solves the issue, click Propose as Answer. Thanks!

Please open Registry Editor and check if there is any entries under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. If no entries exist, you may need to export the branch from a clean Windows 7 system and import it to the problematic system. If the above suggestion does not help, you may need to do In-place Upgrade to repair the system to resolve this issue. Generally your personal data and the programs will not lose. However I still suggest that you backup your important data before In-place Upgrade.Arthur Xie - MSFT

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is indeed populated. The first key is an asterisk (*), followed by a long list of . extension names, and after than a long list of application names. Is there a property in the asterisk (*) key that is set wrong?

I have discovered that the file types dialog works properly if logged on with a local user account. But when I logon with a domain account, the file types dialog is empty.Does this mean there's a group policy on my network that's causing this? If so, which one?
