File Sharing with Windows XP
I want share file with another system with Windows XP Professional SP2 32-bit, but am not able to do so. My current OS is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Previously, I managed to share files between that system with my previous system which is a Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit after much tweaking, headaches and heart aches, blood, sweat and tears. SP3 kind of make everything more difficult but it is for security reasons and I can appreciate that. My problem is that Windows XP system is on a AD domain. If I change that AD domain to local domain, I will not be able to change back to the AD domain because I got no AD administrator rights. I also cannot put my current system on that AD domain because it is a different network. I do understand this is a built in security feature that file sharing only on systems in the same domain. Still transferring files using an external hard disk is just not feasible and I do need to sync the files on the two systems. So any advices on how I can share files, other than migrating to Open Solaris or Fedora??? Thanks.

Hi, We can access shares between the computers whatever they are in the same domain. In this case you need to turn off Simple File Sharing. Then users can access the Windows XP computer with a certification (username/password) in the Windows XP system. Another simpler way is enabling Simple File Sharing and enabling the Guest account in, then give the Guest account the right to access shares in Windows XP. How to configure file sharing in Windows XP If the issue still occurs, temporary disable firewall in Windows XP.Arthur Xie - MSFT

My issue is the computers are in different domain. How I work around was I install XP Mode, and in XP Mode I share the files. But when I first install VM I am quite sure it is Windows XP SP2, and now Windows Update updated my VM to SP3 and now this way of sharing breaks. I hate SP3 but there is no way for me to uninstall SP3 in the XP Mode.

The policy is: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Please change “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Do you mean changing the policy on the Windows XP laptop that I want access to? If so, I am not able to do that because I am not the domain administrator of that laptop. If it is to change the setting on the Windows XP PC that I am accessing from. I have did that but still got the same result. When I access \\192.168.xxx.xxx\c$ I was prompted a login with user name and password. I put in the credentials of a local administrator and password on that Windows XP laptop but the login will be prompted again without any error message.
