File Sharing with Vista
I am running a simple workgroup using both Vista and XP, network configuration is fairly simple and identical on all PCs. On one PC, I have the expected read access rights to all other PC's on the network. On this same PC, I am not allowed to write to any of the other PCs even though I have administrative access. All other PCs can read and writ to this PC in question. This problem only exists on the one PC even though I beleive it is configured the same as all others. Any suggestions as to how to understand why and restore network write capabilities on this one PC?

Hi, I understand that you have one computer just set read permission and no write permission, but all other computers can both read and write to this computer. Firstly, may I know when the issue occurred and if any changes have been made until this? In order to give you more proper suggestion, please let me know the operating system of the problematic computer. Regarding the issue, it may be caused by the factor that the permission settings are not proper. And please try the following suggestions: 1. Check the file sharing settings on the system and the properties of the folder which you want to share: 1) Right-click the folder that you want to share, and then click Properties. 2) Click the Sharing tab. Click Advanced Sharing and click Permissions to check if the user or group names and their permissions to access the files in the shared folder are proper. 3) Click the Security tab and check the if the user or group names and their permissions are proper configured. Note: The permissions take effect according to the size of the group. Since Everyone is the maximal, if you have found the user Everyone, please check if its settings are proper. 2. Please reconfigure the file sharing. We can try to disable the sharing of the files and share it again according to your needs. Here is a document about how to configure to share files: Share files with someone http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/9636e0f2-0223-45d2-89cb-3e317c4509051033.mspx For more information, please refer to the following webpage: File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx Thanks! Hi, Thank you for your update. I understand that the three computers are set C partition sharing to everyone with Full control permissions. Regarding this sentence Computer cannot write to either computer A or Computer C but it can write to itself., do you mean that the computer B failed to write to other computers? At this time, please try the following suggestions: 1. Please create a new account which has administrator permissions on each computer to check the issue. 2. Please reset the security settings with the following steps: Note: Please perform a full system backup first. 1) Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. 2) Type the following command, and then press ENTER: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose You receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message. For more information about this message, view the %windir%\Security\Logs\Scesrv.log file. Note: In Windows Vista, the defltbase.inf file is a Security configuration template for the default security. You can view the settings for this file in the following location: %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf And, for more information, please refer to the following Knowledge Base: How to reset security settings back to the defaults http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;313222 If you have another computer except the three ones, please connect it to the same network and check if this computer have issues on reading and writing in the shared folders. Hope this helps. Nicholas Li - MSFT Nicholas Li - MSFT
