File Sharing between my desktop computer with Windows 7 and my laptop with Windows XP Home Edition using a wireless network.
I have recently installed a new Desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium that is connected to the internet via DSL. I want to share files with my Laptop that has Windows XP Home Edition that is being used wirelessly through a router. I am able to share my printer, but have had no luck sharing files. I have named both "workgroup". Can someone help???

Kaybill,Read this:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/304040?p=1If that doesn't work try searching "XP sharing" in the search bar for Win7 forum. There are plenty of people with a similar problem like yours in here to my knowledge so take a look around to see if there is a problem replication and a solution already avalible.Cheers,Commentator2

In Windows 7, please open “Network and Sharing Center”, click “Change advanced sharing settings” in the left pane. Then, please make sure that “File and Printer Sharing” and “Network Discovery” are enabled. If the issue persists, please let us know if you have set password on the Windows 7 computer. Also please let us know the detail of the error message when the issue occurs. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi,Make sure you've got an account on the XP machine that is identical to the one used on the Windows 7 computer. i.e. same User and Password. (You don't have to use it, but it has to exist.)CheersRem

No error messages. I have not set any passwords in Windows 7 or XP. I can see the files when I open "My Network Places" but cannot access them. It is telling me that I do not have permission and to contact the administrator. I am logged in as administrator but have no idea what to do to allow me to open these files. If I try to change a file on one OS, it does not respond on the other OS. I had no problem sharing files between 2 XP systems.

Hi, excuse me but what part of the word "password" don't you understand? If you go shopping, you can try to convince yourself that you won't need any money, but in fact you do. Network stuff is similar. You just need to have password protected accounts. And those accounts have to be identical in 7 as well as in XP. Good luck Rem

Just try doing the identical login in Windows 7 ultimate and guess what it crashes... The only thing that I can think of is that it is not logging the ip information correctlly, but if you login with an identical id and password on both machines it goes blue screen of death immediately when you access the share... And unique to this is the fact that it also happens if you login to win server 2008 R2 using the admin account and try to access the hard drive.... May want to check out that for security issues as it means you can track any and all activity on the console without a Remote console... It also crashes when you try to access its file system.... So I would say that the issue may be in the file logging of Win 7 transactions, and reporting what and where it is.... Giving a Software protection service error when the system crashes... Spent a hour and a half with a engineer and they are going to pass around the hat on the issue... Supposed to contact me back after the weekend.....
