File Sharing Your folder could not be shared
Guys, I am running Vista Premium RTM on a home network 192.168.x.x network behind a NAT router Somehow... I can't get folder sharing to work. Onecare v1.5 is installed My network is set to Private Sharing and Discovery settings are all ON for : Network Discovery, File Sharing, Pulic Folder Sharing, Printer Sharing, Password Protected Sharing, MEdia Sharing When I go to View Network I see my : ADSL router, Xbox360 Media Extender Media share the PC name itself When I select my PC I expect to see its shares (HP Printer and shared folders etc) The message I get is "\\VISTA1 is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network provider name is invalid." When I attempt to create a new folder share I get "Your folder cannot be shared" However, after this dialog is closed the folder icon has been changed to have "shared folder" icon graphics. Also, if I attempt to add sharing again, the previous attempted setting are still there as if the share was partially set up the first time. I have been using NT since the Green Beta for NT 3.1 and have had my share of weird netbios naming issues and firewall problems. This one has be beat so far. Oh btw I have tried NET STOP WINSS but the behaviour is still there. I don't wantto uninstall

Ok - I don'r think this is Onecare doing it. Here's why.... I uninstalled OneCare - with no benefit Iadded an XP machine to the LAN and it can see the SHARES just as you would expect I re-installed OneCare and the XP shares stopped working ... BUT only until I set the filewall rules up then the XP machine could see shares again. Solved? Well no.... The VISTA machine still cannot browse itself nor can it complete the "create new share" process without the "Your folder cannot be shared" When I try to browse the VISTA machine from itself I still get "\\VISTA1 is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network provider name is invalid." How can it get its own name wrong from the network dialog box? Weird huh?

Steve, I I have created a bunch of shared folders using the normal methods. Note: even though I say the sharing dialog fails with "your folder could not be shared" the share does seem to be created sufficiently for the XP machine to see them. As you say though, when you go to network and click the vista machine (from the vista machine) the branch should open and display the list of shares. Alas this fails with the "\\VISTA1 is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network provider name is invalid." My Win2000 test machine see this... I will admit that this level of network diagnosis is over my head. I think your best bet, since we've determined that OneCare isn't the culprit here, would be to head over to the Vista networking newsgroup in the public newsgroups - http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/Default.aspx -steve Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare Forum Moderator
