File Sharing Problems
I have the following:-A laptop which came with Vista Premium installed and a wireless connection-A desktop running XP with LAN connection, hosting the belkin router (acting as the file server)My problem:I'm trying to access my desktop with my laptop via Windows File Sharing. Unfortunately, I am unable to access my files no matter how I set up File Sharing within Vista. Somehow, it recognizes the desktop on the network map, but it won't let me access it, stating it cant find the specified computer. However, another laptop in my household running XP is able to show and access this laptop's files along with the desktop's files. I've adjusted the firewall every which way (I use Norton for this, and have also tried switching back and forth, as well as turning the firewall completely off to rule out any firewall issues), still no luck. Just as well, I've installed the LLTP Responder; that only made it show up on the network map. This is becoming increasingly frustrating as this would normally be a simple task, and am wondering if this is just another bug in Vista that needs to be patched (leave it to premature Beta releases!) I've also included a screen shot if this helps at all.Any suggestions?(See in the folder pane where it clearly shows "Guestbedroom" as an option.)

yes, if it has Vista Business, if you go into advanced sharing properties, you will find that the settings you put in the sharing wizard did not transfer to advanced. It appears that advanced superceeds the Wizard. After going into the advanced you probably had read only or less.

Nope, just plain Vista Premium. Tried what you'd mentioned and it still showed the main computer on the network map, but then claimed to not find it.In my experience so far, Vista does not play well with others.I appreciate the suggestion, however, as anything will help me to get closer to a solution :)

I have Vista at home that is Premium that is in a workgroup, , Vista at work that is Business in a Domain. The sharing at work, works, the sharing at home doesn't.At home I can not successfully share my Vista USB hp printer, at work, as long as I go through the advanced sharing, it works. At home, I went as far as to put the logins and passwords identical in both machines, the Vista and the XP Pro, the Vista can see the XP just fine though. So this is either a "domain" issue, or a Premium vs Business issue. To add to that though, the sharing appears to be identical, at least in process between the two.

Well I've sorted it - I think I've just changed my old PC to a new Vista Home Premium system. The old PC had various folders; camera, music, Homework files etc. and acted a as a server to other wired PCs. I could then backup from one location. The other machines and the and the one of just scrapped are Windos XP pro. All the machines had mapped drives K throughP to these shares. When I swapped over all the files from the old to the new PC I wanted to keep the existing mappings. I made sure the Vista computer name was set correctly and the domain was the same. I started by turning off the windows firewall - I rely on the router firewall. Maybe not the best but its been OK up to now. I have just one login on the Vista machine. The other machines have individual user accounts. I could easily see all the other PCs ( they are shared on their root drives) from the Vista machine through explorer but not through network map. I set sharing on the properties tab for the shared folders. The other machines could see them but not access them. Back to the properties dialog for each folder. Select share and add a new user -'Guest'. Select advanced sharing.. permissions; Set sharing permissions as required. Select the security tab. Select user 'Guest' and assign permissions as required. Now I can see all the PCs from the Vista machine and they can each access the folders that I've shared on the Vista machine. If you want the remote PCs to appear on the Vista Network map you need to download the this http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70582onto each XP machine.
