File Sharing Between Windows 7 and Vista
I have recently upgraded one of my Vista machines to Windows 7. I still have one machine running Vista. Prior to the upgrade when the machine still had Vista on it, I was able to access the shared Public file from the other Vista machine. But after upgrading the machine to 7 I am no longer able to open the shared Public file from the machine running Vista. This was an upgrade, NOT a fresh install so all the other settings carried over just fine. But for some reason I keep getting the Error:Windows Cannot Access \\ComputerName\Public-Check the spelling of the name. Or other wise there may be a problem with your network. To try to identify and reslove the network problems, click diagnose.I click Diagnose and get:"Public" is available but the user account that you are logged on with is denied access.-Windows cannot further diagnose the problem because network diagnostics does not know the user name and password that is required to connect to the shared folder.*The folder has never been and still is not password protected. When I am on the Windows 7 machine I am able to access the shared folder on the Vista machine with no problems.I've set full control to everyone. Still unable to open.I have turned off the firewall services completely through computer manager. On both machines.I have turned off my Windows Security Essentials. On both machines.I've unshared the files and shared them again. Still nothing.Shared New folders. They show on network but unable to openI've tried just about everything I can think of and have seen in threads and posts and still unable to get the computers talking. Is there anyone who might be able to help me with this or give me some new ideas to try? Please, much appreciated.

Hi RobertCompsult,TryStart>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing CenterIn the left pane you should see "change advanced sharing settings", select that and confirm that Turn on network discovery, turn on file and printer sharing, and Publiv folder sharing>turn on sharing so anyone with network access... are all on. Save and close out. That's the first check.

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Boot the both computers to Safe Mode with networking and check how it works. 2. If there are any other shared resouces or computers on the network, please also try to access them from the Windows 7 computer. In addition, I would like to share the following with you for your reference: Troubleshoot file and printer sharing Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hello Nano,Thank you for taking the time to answer. But everything that pretty much needs to be turned on in the settings is on. Everyone on the network has full control of the file. I've even tried turning everything off then back on but still nothing. Thanks,Robert

Hi, Thank yo ufor your update. Please also try the following: 1. Check if all the computers can ping each other with IP Address and computer name. 2. Temporarily disable all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on all the computers and check if it works. 3. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all the computers: 1) Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”. 2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3) Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list. 4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab. 6) Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hello Nicholas, Thank you very much for the time you took to answer, once again. I've followed through with each of those steps as well, but to no avail. It seems to be having the same problem. Thank you, Robert
