I've noticed that some common file extensions are missing from the DefaultPprogram list; .eml and .zip are but two examples. Is there any way to add them to the list- I already have the programs with which to open them!

Superbear -1.) What are those programs you've got installed for handling email and ZIP files? By default, Windows 7 doesn't do email. You need an app like Windows LiveMail, or a copy of Outlook or Thunderbird to be installed before you have the correct handlers. Zip files should work with ZipFolders - Windows native Zip file handling. 2.) (assuming these apps are already installed) What happens when you click on a ZIP file? Does it open with the app you installed?

I'm using WLM to handle e-mail, and I've downloaded 7-Zip for .zip files. Even if Windows 7 does have an inbuilt utility to handle .zip files, surely such files should logically still be shown in the list of protocols together with the WinZip application that unzips them (yes, it does work!)?

If I understood your original post correctly, you're just looking to reassociate file types right?Go to the Start (orb?) and type "make a file type open" and you should get a link to edit your associations. You can also get to it manually by going, Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations

HensonStu , unfortunately you have not understood my original posting correctly! The problem is that the appropriate file extension is not there, so you can't associate a program with it. I did manage to add the .eml extension to the list, but that only led to a further issue, which you will find on another of my threads. But thanks anyway for trying to assist....

I remember your last post about the .eml files. It's actually faster to change the default program from the desktop or wherever the file is. Anything that opens with windows explorer as the default program won't be on that list from the control panel. I you right click on .zip file and select properties it will say opens with explorer. Yoy can select change and choose from what programs may be on that list or browse for another. You may have to expand the list with the little up arrow just underneath to toward the right of where it says other programs. Once you have selected your program it will be added to the list in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs.

Silly thing is, I added the .eml file extension to the list, then associated windows Live Mail with it, and it didn't work properly. I uninstalled WLM, re-installed WLM, and it still didn't work. This morning, I switched on, and it now works perfectly. Damned if I know....

Something I discovered is when I select a messege from WLM and drag it to the desktop when I try to open it there is no file association.I examined it and noticed the extension of the filewas ._eml instead of .eml soI renamedit without the underscore and it opened with the readingpane like it should. What I did before was associate that ._eml extension withWLM and that only opens the main program window. This is definately a bug with the program and that slight difference in the file extension that occurs when dragging messeges to the dektop is throwing people way off because it's hard to spot.

I had a similar problem. I could not figure out how to get Windows to add .zip to the list, however I did find that 7zip will do this for you. Just load the 7zip file manager and choose Tools->Options, then make sure you are on the System tab. It will list all the compression extensions. Choose what you want and that should do the trick.Cyric
