File Association problem with .ptv files
We recently upgraded to Windows 7 x64 Professional. When I am logged in, I try to associate a .ptv file with windows media player and the video will play, and the WMP icon will diplay on the .ptv files; so I know the association worked. Whenever I log off, or restart/shutdownhowever, the association is lost. I have tried to associate it with a local admin account and my normal profile and the same thing happens. It always reverts back to being unassociated with WMP. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Chaosphynx, Please try the following suggestion and see if the issue can be resolved: 1. Right click on the .ptv file and then click Open with… -> Choose default program. 2. Select the program you would like to open .ptv file. 3. Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". 4. Click OK. For more information about file association in Windows 7, please refer to: Change which programs Windows uses by default Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. YEs, sorry I forgot to include that I had done that, I also tried to associate it through the control panel in default programs. Any method comes up with the same result after a log off or restart/shutdown.

YEs, sorry I forgot to include that I had done that, I also tried to associate it through the control panel in default programs. Any method comes up with the same result after a log off or restart/shutdown. You may manually associate this file in the registry by this [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ptv] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ptv\OpenWithProgids] "WMP11.AssocFile.PTV"=hex(0): [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ptv\UserChoice] "Progid"="WMP11.AssocFile.PTV" or you may download this reg file and extract it http://y1.cesabarre.com/index.php?c=rt&mf=i&mp=rtd&rtcat=File+Associations&srt=PTV+Files+Open+With+Media+Player it will do just exactly what the above will. I tried to use your method above using your link and was not successful, here are the error messages I got: When runnig the .reg file within regedit (file, import) I get: "Cannot import N:\PTV+Files+Open+With+Media+Playerv7.reg: The specified file is not a registry file. You can only import registry files." When running it outside of regedit I get: "Cannot import N:\PTV+Files+Open+With+Media+Playerv7.reg: Error opening the file. There may a disk or file system error." However the file itself does say it is a .reg in the properties.
