Faulting application name: mmc.exe, version: 6.3.9600.17415

After I opened device manager it paused then loaded all the hardware in my computer.  Then it crashed (as it keeps doing lately) and gave me this error message: "microsoft management console has stopped working."  From the event viewer I see this:

Faulting application name: mmc.exe, version: 6.3.9600.17415, time stamp: 0x54504e26

I've run sfc /scannow & it said said it completed what it could but there were some files it couldn't replace.  I looked at the cbs.log but I don't know what I'm looking at so it didn't help.  I also ran sfc /scannow from safe mode and got same result.

I hope this was the right place to post my question.

Thanks,
Tony

Did you run DISM?  Description for how to is in this wiki

I ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

first.  It found and fixed errors.  Then I rebooted.

Just now ran thisC:\Windows\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031

No component store corruption detected.
The operation completed successfully.

Yet when I try to load device manager it still gives me the same error message reported above.  Windows event log gave this info:

Any idea what I should do next?

Hi tonbur,

What is your current situation?

Check Windows Update and see if we have installed any updates there.

If yes, try to uninstall the recent update and check if issue insists.

As the DISM command doesn't work here, you may consider to do a PC Restore/Refresh.

How to  refresh, reset, or restore your PC

Best regards

Uninstalling recent Windows Updates did not resolve the issue.  I am unwilling to refresh/reset because 99% of what I have installed isn't metro & I don't have a week to dedicate to getting everything reinstalled and configured.  Guess I'll live with it not working until I can't.

What about other MMC functions.  Do they crash too or is it just DevMgr?  Also, any difference if you start them elevated?

Otherwise you could try 'shooting your dump and look for more clues there.
