You can change the power options from the control panel and change it to let the computer slow down when idle. By default is not very aggressive. I have my machine set to 10% and its very good. Vote if helpful, I am running for Office (joke), also mark questions answered. IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Whatever I need a new web server, the antique IBM 300GL has a 137GB disk limit, for my chess site. My server's disk finally croaked, I am out of work, I need to get a new server as the old IBM is past its prime.

Kevin,Did you say that you upgraded the video card? Could it be the video card that has the loud fan?

Anything problem could be you power supply is being overloaded. A more powerful model has beter cooling capacity and would help mitigate the heat from additional and upgraded hardware. A better chassis that has extra fans would also be of help with you machine as if the original chassis does not have extra fan slots. Kevin,Did you say that you upgraded the video card? Could it be the video card that has the loud fan? Maybe. But Kevin, you didn't provide much info on what changed, or what steps you tookto sort it out. This articleexplains why some recent nVidia drivers are causing the system fan to run more than before: "Laptop makers have apparently already been given an updated GPU driver which kicks in fans sooner to reduce "thermal stress" on the GPU". If you research HP's site, you'll find they acknowledge this only with the nVidia+AMD combination. (But not with Intel for some reason).Of course, if your computer has turned into a commercial leaf blower(or worse), that's probably a sign that something is not quite right.
