Failure to start w32time service
I get the following error trying to start the w32time service... Error 1290: The service start failed since one or more services in the same process have an incompatible service SID type setting. A service with restricted service SID type can only coexist in the same process with other services with a restricted SID type. If the service SID type for this service was just configured, the hosting process must be restarted in order to start this service. I've tried regsvr32 /u w32time.dll and regsvr32 w32time.dll. I've tried rebooting obviously. Any ideas? Platform windows7 64.

Please temporary disable antivirus, then try to enable this service. If it does not help, the service might be corrupt. I suggest you follow the steps below to repair the related Registry part. 1. Launch Notepad. 2. Copy the following content into Notepad. Save to Desktop with the name win32time.reg. 4. Launch the saved file from Desktop to modify the registry. If it does not resolve the issue, you may need to run In-place Upgrade to repair the system. The installed programs and your personal data will not be lost after In-place Upgrade. However I still recommend that you backup important data before repair. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I should have also mentioned - I did a w32tm /unregister and w32tm /register (this wipes the registry entries you gave and reinitialises them to defaults). So, I don't think your manual editing of the registry will help. I'm really looking for a better solution than reinstalling the OS. Thanks though.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps: Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit.exe in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue . Locate the following registry subkey, and then click it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TapiSrv In the details pane, right-click ImagePath , and then click Modify . In the Value data box, type the following registry value, and then click OK : %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k NetworkService Note If NetworkService does not appear in the %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k NetworkService registry value, the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section may occur. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer. Note If you try to start the Telephony service before you restart the computer, you may receive the following error message: Error 1290: The service start failed since one or more services in the same process have an incompatible service SID type setting. A service with restricted service SID type can only coexist in the same process with other services with a restricted SID type. If the service SID type for this service was just configured, the hosting process must be restarted in order to start this service.

Only thing I ought to mention incase others have the same problem: My registry value did have %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k NetworkService already so I just deleted and rewrote the last character. It seems the registry edit was picked up on by something after the reboot. I can now start the w32time service correctly. Cheers!
