I just updated to windows 7. I play a game called Hearts of Iron III. The Menu does open but when I select "Start HOI3" the menu closes normally, but then the popup "failed to create a graphic device. Exiting" opens and shuts down I have updated all my drivers using Hardware Helper and am at a standstill now. Windows 7 was updated from Windows XP, where the game played fairly well. The computer is 32bit with PNY Verto GeForce FX5200 graphics card

You need to contact the publisher of the game to find out if the game is compatible with Windows 7. Here's something else you might want to try. Uninstall the game. Reboot. Right-click the game installer, click "Properties", "Compatibility" tab, check the option "Run this program in compatiblity mode for:", select one of the Windows XP modes in the dropdown box, then click the "OK" button. Now right-click the installer, click "Run as administrator".Hammer842

Thanks to both of you, I have been a member of Paradox forums for some time, but getting a message to them is also a problem. I did not want to move to anything past Windows XP, but just recently had to to do it. MS has got to learn to be capable of grandfathering their software. A final thought. If you make the change to the installer as I suggested and the game still has problems, try the following: For the shortcut that runs the game, set the "Run this program in compatiblity mode for:" option to one of the Windows XP modes, preferably the same one used to run the installer. Again I thank both of You, It seems that Microsoft is single-handedly mandating that anytime you update to a new version of ?Windows?, that you need to change your video card and all drivers. At the present time Hearts of Iron still does not work and I also cannot use my Brother HL-2040 printer. In addition, almost any game from Sierra, Hoyle and other games do not work. I have been retired now for 6 years (71 yo) and seldom use FoxPro Professional 6.0 (MS has been trying to kill it since 91 when they bought out FoxBase and the Original FoxPro). That does not work correctly anymore. Again, I thank you for your advice, but thanks to MS, it still cannot work. I will probably reinitialize my #1 hard drive and revert back to XP. I also cannot see why you need graphic accelerators to play the games I play. Windows7 needs them to play solitaire. That is STUPID. Does the idea of grandfathering your operating system totally gone? Maybe you couldn't do it with an 8 bit machine, but with the machines you have now it is totally irresponsible. I will not be buying new hardware as I already have 5 machines now. 1 linux, 1 DOS 6.22/Windows 3.11 (Still works well), 1 each Windows 95 and Windows 98 machines (still usable...) Thanks, John C. Microsoft has nothing to do with grandfathering the hardware. The hardware manufacturer is the on that decides whether to provide for a new operating system or not. The hardware may well pass the Microsoft compatibility, but Microsoft is not the one that writes and publishes the hardware drivers and system BIOS, that is solely the responsibility of the hardware manufacturer.
