Likewise unable to make that annoying yellow shield from Auromatic Update go away and recognize I have successfully installed this update seven times now... Finally just chose to ignore the update & install, but this is only a band-aid. Any recommendation, MS, on how to make your system recognize a successful installation and stop pestering me with an 'urgent update' ? Fed up with this nonsense... Looking for a solution

Well, I think I found a solution, for XP at least. I don't know if this will work for everyone experiencing this problem, but here goes. I downloaded the update program "msxml4-KB936181-enu.exe" from the Microsoft site, not Windows Update. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=021E12F5-CB46-43DF-A2B8-185639BA2807&displaylang=en I ran the program and told it to remove all. I plugged it in for awhile and expected itto be fully charged, instead I got emply battery icon with a message of plugged in but not charging. Itcannot be loose cable connection because without plugged in, notebook would be dead and my battery is only10 months old. Can someone help? Thanks.

I am running XP. I used TDeGrenier's solution, but I first had to uninstall the Windows Installer 3.1, reboot, reinstall Windows Installer 3.1, and then reboot again. When I uninstalled Windows Installer 3.1, it gave me a warning about application dependencies, but I ignored it without any problems. I figured it didn't matter since I was going to reinstall it right away anyways. And it seemed to work without a hitch, but I could be wrong. I don't recommend this method, and I would try the other solutions first, but if you're determined to try it: Google: Windows Installer -- for the download, or go here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en You will need this to reinstall, so grab it first. You can uninstall it from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, btw. Use at your own risk. And good luck.

I too have had the same problem. Installed it numerous times, my history shows its installed. Is anyone at Microsoft awake? The problem should have come to their attention via their own systems checks, been rectified and an answer sent out to one and all using their products. My bigger concern is whether or not this is holding back other updates that should be appearing or downloaded via the Automatic Update function. TSawyer56

I just read the solutions posted for the XP user. My only problem is I haven't a clue what it all means. I tried following some forum solutions a couple of years ago when I first got a computer and totally screwed it up, costing me a few hundred dollars to get the thing back to normal. Still being a novice, I am reluctant to start navigating through things I don't understand. Seems strange to me that users have to come up with solutions to a manufacturers products. Ahh, Customer Service.....another American myth along with Big Foot and Extraterrestrials!! Have to admit I did get adventurous by typing in the xml info in the address line as a last ditch frustrated effort. TSawyer56

Yes after many weeks/months of this, I did a search and ended up here, downloaded the fix then tried running the windows update symbol, it installed again. then a few seconds later there was internet activity... and the windows update symbol once again, opened it, same xml update. I ran the fix yet again, its still there. I clicked the symbol but this time unchecked the box and closed it, then went to the Microsoft website and did a search of that xml update, and manually did the update from there, it askedto agree to the license, yes, ran it, this time it says it must reboot to finish, so I rebooted... no symbol. waited a while, internet activity, no symbol, thought great its all fixed. rebooted again, still no symbol. powered off yesterday aft. and today? the symbol is back, same xml update... I clicked and let it install. watched and again the symbol is there right now. My explanation for this is that I dont have an explanation. but am willing to try this in a specific sequence

ok, so i just tried that and it wouldn't work. because there was some installation already in progress and i coulnd't remove or stop it. i got in touch with hp and they gave me a few steps that i will forward on to you all. please remember to read carefully and make sure that this specifically matches your situation. And remember to make sure that you have your system to automatically create a restore point so if you need to you can go back. also, i had a windows search 4.0 get installed the same time, but it wasn't listed as a x64 vista home premium update. so i removed that too and did all thesteps. after doing all this, i got the windows search 4.0 for windows vista x64 based systems, which might have also been an issue. TRY TURNING OFF YOUR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE WHEN RUNNING YOUR INSTALLS. KEEP IT ON WHEN DOWNLOADING THE CONTENT FROM THE URL's BUT ONCE DOWNLOADED AND REBOOTED WITH THE SETTINGS AND STARTUP TASKS OFF. THEN TURN OFF YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND BEGIN INSTALLING. IF UNCOMFORTABLE, RUN A SCAN ON THE FILES BEFOREHAND. you might want to try this first. if have the install problem saying something is already in progress or the regular steps don't work for you. These are the steps to stop any un wanted process or program from running during start up.1. Click Start > Type Run in the search box and press enter. 2. Type MSCONFIG 3. Click OK 4. Click STARTUP tab 5. Uncheck all the programs except RECGUARD, KBD, PCHBUTTON, NISSERV.EXE, NISUM.EXE, Ccapp, Cfgwiz and CCRegVfy if listed. 6. Click OK 7. Restart the system If some of the programs mentioned above is missing, it is normal. Please continue with the instructions. After Restart in the pop up window put a checkmark on "Don't show this message or launch system configuration when windows starts." option and hit Ok. Here is what the main part of the install is. Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility 1. Please visit the following link to download the tool: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe Please copy and paste the entire link in a new Internet Explorer window. NOTE: The URL above will take you to a non HP Web site. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site. 2. Save the file to the computer. 3. Double click the msicuu2.exe to install this tool on the computer. After doing that, please take the following steps to remove previous installation of Microsoft XML Core Services.Stefan D: Step 2: Remove MSXML software 1. Click "Start" -> "(All) Programs" -> "Windows Installer Clean Up". 2. See if you can find MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 or its updates. If so, remove them. 3. Restart the computer. After that, please try to reinstall MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 and KB936181.Step 3: Reinstall MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 IF THAT DIDN'T WORK.... THIS WILL. 1. Please download the following files and save them to the Desktop. MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/6/5/9657c01e-107f-409c-baac-7d249561629c/msxml.msi NOTE: The URL above will take you to a non HP Web site. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site. Please copy and paste the entire link in a new Internet Explorer window. 2. After the files are downloaded, please double-click the files to install them in order. BE AWARE OF THE NAME YOU SAVE THEM AS. AND MAKE SURE YOU DO SAVE TO DESKTOP SO YOU CAN FIND IT EASILY. MAKE NOTE OF THEM AS YOU SAVE, SO YOU CAN CHECK WHICH ONE WAS SAVED FIRST. also, i had noticed that i got an error saying the log was not found for the second install. just try to re-download it. otherwise just restart your computer with all the startup tasks back on. After that, please access the Windows update site to check if this issue has been resolved SO FAR SO GOOD. FOR ME THAT IS. GOOD LUCK! oh yeah, i also cleared my history, cache, cookies and temporary internet files before doing this all. just to make sure there wasn't anything keeping my computer from thinking this was all fresh.

SAVE IT TO YOUR DESKTOP HERE IS THE SITE: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=021E12F5-CB46-43DF-A2B8-185639BA2807&displaylang=en THIRD: ONCE IT IS ON YOUR DESKTOP, RIGHT-CLICK ON THE ICON AND THEN CLICK ON THE OPTION "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" FOURTH: RESTART YOUR COMPUTER THIS HAS FIXED IT FOR ME AFTER I HAD DOWNLOADED THIS UPDATE OVER 20 TIMES AND WAS STILL ASKED TO REINSTALL AND THEN GOT THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE YOU GOT.NOW IT IS ALL GOOD. I downloaded the file from Microsoft.com also. Tried doing the 'repair' option first but that didn't help. Then after reading these forum posts, I tried the first option of removing it and reinstalling it with the same file I downloaded. I was still receiving the update error afterwards. So as this user posted below, I removed it with the downloaded file from Microsoft and reinstalled the update from the Windows Update tool and now the problem is solved! Been doing it for months and I should have looked for information on how to fix it sooner. Thanks for the help from everyone! valando wrote: HI .I tried to download XML CS4SP and uninstalled it from my computer. then I reinstalled it after reboot. but I found that the update still come up. so I uninstalled it again and installed the update from vista windows update.

I have the same problem. My computer has been reinstalling Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 over and over again for over a month. Sometimes it installs several times a day. I am going to call the local Microsoft Office tommorow to see if they have a suggestion. I will let everyone know what they say.

I have also had a problem with this update. The update indicates that it installed successfully but it keeps prompting me to install it, over and over again. YES!! THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO ME AND NOW MY COMPUTER KEEPS FREEZING ON ME! I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE DARN SERVICE PACK THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ACTING RIGHT! PLEASE HELP!!!

I rebooted and then ran the program again to install it. I then ran the Windows Update file for "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2". After reboot, the icon is gone and it no longer pops up. Yea!!!!! Good Luck all, TDeGrenier ty so so sooooooo much oh my no more shield every time i turn on computer ,works 100% had this problem for so long !!!!
