I manage dozens of websites for my clients. FTP with FireFTP was working without a problem on Windows 7. But since I upgraded to Windows 8 PRO I get connection timeouts every time I am switching directories or uploading files on the remote server.

Tried with FileZilla as well, same problem. Tried with another PC still on Windows 7, no problem at all.

Could be a firewall problem within Windows 8, but I cannot figure it out.

This is a major problem. I cannot use FTP at all on my Windows 8 machine ...

How about if your turn off Firewall?

I found it should be compatible with Windows 8 as they official website said. Also, I recommand you change a FTP client to test again. Eg SmartFTP.

I tried with Windows firewall completely switched off, and disabled all shields of Avast antivirus, but problem persists.

As I already mentioned I tried with both FireFTP and FileZilla, they both have more or less the same problem, connection times out.

The strange thing is that occasionally I CAN switch directories or upload a file to a remote server. But eventually after 5 - 10 directory changes the connection will time out

Well, very strange, but yesterday and today I installed some Windows 8 updates, and I upgraded my Avast virusscanner to the latest version (8.0.1483).

After those upgrades my FTP software is working again. Impossible to track down what actually solved the issue, but both FileZilla and FireFTP work. I did not modify settings in FileZilla or FireFTP.

I cannot tell if the problem was caused by Windows 8 or by Avast. So the only advice I can give to people who have the same issue: install the latest Windows 8 updates, and upgrade Avast antivirus to the latest version (if you have Avast on you system)

I had this exact same problem with Windows 8.1 and FileZilla.  This all started with Windows 8.1 upgrade.  When I turned off AVG everything works.  Not sure exactly where the problem lies at this point.

I've had exactly the same problem with Windows 8.1 with AVG Free and Enterprise DT edtFTPnet/PRO
FTP. On Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, all with AVG and edtFTP Pro, everything works.

On 8.1, if I disable AVG, FTP works. If I re-enable AVG, FTP stops working.

I need to find a solution and will keep you posted.

FYI, having the same issue, HAVE avg Cloud care... Disabled it, but that does not work either
