FTP Server won't work
I am trying to set up my home PC as an FTP server that I can use to access large files remotely. I have Windows 7 Ultimate and have added the FTP service components within control panel. I have also checked my DLink router configuration to set up port forwarding for TCP 21. Then I went to the IIS Admin panel to check security settings, etc. which look good. I've even checked my windows firewall to ensure that FTP is allowed. All this and I still can't connect via FTP. I thought it was a static vs dynamic IP issue so I signed up for a no-ip.com dynamic-to-static translation service so I can use a host name instead of an IP address. That didn't seem to solve my issues. To test, I first tried to ping my computer remotely, which was successful - both using the host name and IP address. Then I tried to connect using an FTP client (both IE8 and FileZilla) and they couldn't connect. I checked to see if the FTP clients are set to passive mode as well. I've also checked to make sure the FTP service is running in Windows 7. I'm out of ideas now. Is it possible my ISP is somehow disallowing FTP, or am I still missing something?

It's possible, but not likely. More likely something isn't configured properly in IIS. If all you need is FTP, why don't you use something like the Filezilla Server (http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server) or Cerberus (http://www.cerberusftp.com/)? Both are much easier to configure than IIS and use fewer resources as well (Cerberus is the easier of the two to configure, but Filezilla seems a bit more stable with large files). And yes, they both work on x64 as well as x86.

Thanks- I'll give those a try Bob. I figured the built-in FTP service in Windows 7 would be easy to set up an configure, but guess I was wrong :)

So let me get this straight - although MS advertizes that FTP is available in Win 7, and the FTP capability is supposed to be available, it doesn't work? I am supposed to buy a third-party software, or go to a third-party website to get the Win 7 FTP feature to work? Am I correct?

No you are wrong, you do not understand much do you, IIS FTP works just fine, IF you set it up right, it is just a simple as some others. My win 7 pro right here is at this very moment allowing the downloading for videos produced this a.m. , those videos where upload last night for Peru (I am in the US) There is PLENTY of docs on setting up IIS FTP. You have to understand many of the folks posting here have very little computer skills, which is why they are here asking questions, so you must read what they post and filter the noise out.

Hi If you want to use IIS ftp i sugest that you read this page http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/263/installing-and-configuring-ftp-on-iis-7/ Then on your router dont forget to open for the passive ports that your ftp server are usingBest Regards Chris Steding MCTS Windows 7 Configuration www.compit.se

I got less than helpful advice - see below - telling me that I didn't understand enough about FTP or Win 7 or whatever. Also I see that one of the soultions recommended is that I procure 3d party software that obviously WORKS BETTER than the app that comes with the operating system. Gee, what a good deal. If you get a real answer - one that works - PLEASE let me know! By the way, the only way that Remote Desktop works it by downloading a third party software, and then doing the install and configuration in about 5 minutes. Thanks again, Microsoft!
