FIM 2010 R2 moving from eval to fully licensed

I'm running out of time on my eval license of FIM and now have a licensed version of FIM 2010 R2 that needs installing. Am I right in thinking that the transition from eval to fully licensed is:

1. Backup DBs and configuration information on FIM server
2. Uninstall FIM 2010 R2
3. Re-install FIM 2010 R2 using same service account information and simply point configuration at the existing databases?

Anything I missed?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

thats the correct doing, but dont forget a copy of the sync keys in order to reuse the sync database.

Hi,

Yes you can take the Backup of FIM DBs and Encryption Key and reinstall the licensed version.

Thanks

A simple way i think would be to reinstall the licensed version over the current installation (without uninstall).

For both FIM Service and Sync Service.

Thanks for the tip guys, I have another issue though - my SQL version is also an eval license. I've tried going into SQL installation centre, then maintenance and upgrade, but the eval version will not accept my volume license SQL key. I think a possible cause is that my eval version uses SQL SP2, whereas the volume license media I have is SQL RTM

Is there a simple way I can re-install SQL over the top or would it require a total uninstall and re-install, plus I'm assuming a SQL uninstall and re-install would break the FIM integration, so FIM would need a re-install anyway

Hello,

you normally can do a Edition Upgrade in the SQL Installer under Maintenance, also from Eval to other Editions, but i think you can not go back in built versions on that.

So best is to Slipstream the SP2 into your RTM SQL Media, then use Edition Upgrade.

Or backup all databases (incl. system) uninstall SQL, then re-install SQL RTM and apply SP2, after that restore the databases.

Both methods should not harm the FIm install.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your advice, unfortunately I found out how to resolve this the hard way:

1. Entering SQL 2008 R2 product key under maintenance worked fine (i.e. key accepted and maintenance wizard finishes OK), but every time I checked the license details under the maintenance node it showed "eval" (even after reboot). To resolve this:

1. Performed a full SQL backup of fimservice and fimsyncrhonizationservice DBs
2. Used a Technet SQL script to export logins
3. Uninstalled SQL 2008 R2
4. Re-installed the licensed version of SQL 2008 R2 and then SP2
5. Attached my original SQL DBs
6. Ran alter database with broker no wait
7. Ran the script generated in step 2 above to import logins (although this is not needed as the logins are on the  same server).

At this point SQL is OK.

I then tried doing an over the top FIM install - works as expected, until you go into the syncrhonization service application, help and about - again the "this evaluation period will expire in x days appears". To resolve that:

8. Uninstall FIM synchronization service
9. Tried to uninstall FIM service and portal, however when I tried to uninstall the service and portal I received a permissions error regarding the SharePoint farm administrators so I cancelled that.

10. Rebooted
11. Installed FIM synchronization service, using the option to keep the existing service DBs (choose existing SQL instance).
12. Rebooted and checked for evaluation warning message in help and about of FIM synchronization service app - all gone :-)
