FIM 2010 R2 & Active Directory Update from 2003 to 2012

Hello,

We are about to upgrade existing Active Directory infrastructure from 2003 to 2012. Considering Domain name will remain as it is but IP for DC and Hostname will be changed. FIM Version currently being implemented is FIM 2010 R2 4.1.3419.0.

Require help in finding the feasibility & possibility as per the up-gradation activity. URLs for help are also welcomed. Appreciating in advance in case anyone can help with the steps to be perf

You may be better off asking the AD upgrade questions in the AD forums.

Nevertheless, there are multiple posts & documents on how to do this out there.

Here are some starting points:

Well, I am not concerned about AD upgrade. I have querry for integration changes to be taken care for FIM 2010 perspectives.

How are you planning to do the upgrade, new dc's and raise domain-level but keep domain-name and structure?
special schema?
exchange?

what type of integrations do you have?

Hard to answer but you'll have to do the connector reconfiguration.

If possible, the best way is to make a clone of the current FIM and AD to try it out before upgrade.

Thanks Tobias,

We will do this firstly in development environment only but for your queries: The domain name and structure will remain the same considering only the AD Upgrade with Schema changes that comes along.

What do you mean by type of integrations we have?

I think refreshing the schema of ADMA would be enough as we are not upgrading/changing anyhting with Exchange.

Unless I am missing something why not just provision new DC's with new names/IP's and deprovision the old ones when everything is replicated?

Ryan, I would really appreciate if you can provide me some confident steps to proceed with this.

OK provided I have understood your requirements correctly you are simply trying to upgrade your domain to 2012 R2?

If this is the case there is no need to use FIM.

To update all you have to do is

Build new Domain Controllers in each site on Windows Server 2012 R2

Configure these with your new desired hostnames and IP's

Install Active Directory from Server Manager

Promote to Domain Controllers

Once you have all your new Domain Controllers in place migrate the FSMO roles to one of your new DC's, it can be done using the commands in this post http://blog.ryanbetts.co.uk/2014/10/migrating-and-seizing-active-directory.html

Test that all of the new Domain Controllers are replicating properly with the old ones, so do some testings with NLTEST, DCDIAG, REPADMIN, Event Logs etc. When you are happy simply decommission out the old Domain Controllers using DCPROMO, if DCPROMO completes properly it should remove most of the meta-data for the old DC's.

Do some more testing, and then raise the Domain/Forest levels as you like, baring in mind if you raise it to 2012 R2 only 2012 R2 DC's can be inside the domain. This does not include member server.

No, he's already got FIM implemented and is planning on upgrading from 2003
to 2012 DCs and wants to know the impact on FIM, i

Ryan,

Appreciate the steps, these will definitly add something to my knowledge but as Paul Adare mentioned I am more concerned about the impact or considerations to be taken for FIM to keep on working on 2012 DCs as well and not for the steps required to upgrade AD.
