Extremly slow Windows 7 login to domain
Hey All, For the past few weeks i have been pulling out my hair due to extremely slow logins to my domain. We are currently running windows XP with local profiles and have no issues with login speeds. On several test machines we are looking at windows 7 deployment. We are running windows 7 64bit joined to our server 2008 r2 domain. On login with a student account it will stick on the welcome screen for around 30 - 40 seconds and then stick on Preparing Your Desktop from anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute. This is the first login for that user, once the profile is created it will login in around 5 - 15 seconds. Is there any way to speed up the initial login while it is creating the profile? Before we started playing with Windows 7 we used roaming mandatory profiles which worked great. The only reason i moved away from this is i was told that this is not the ideal setup and should be using local profiles. Is this correct? We are looking at deploying over 400 laptops next year (this is why i was told we should move to local profiles) Any Ideas would be great!!! Thanks

follow my guide [1] to make a boot trace and compress the boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl as 7z or RAR and upload it to your Skydrive [2] and post the link here. I take a look at the trace, maybe I see what's wrong with your Windows. Thanks for the reply! I have followed the steps you posted to make a boot trace, but once I restart the computer it blue screens and does a memory dump. I have tried it several times and always the same result. Thanks Sam

Remove the DRIVERS flag from the command like. Only use the other flags or remove all USB devices when you run the trace."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi, your Windows takes 73s to boot to the desktop and 98s to boot completely. The PreSMSS and SMSSInit (driver loading) is fine. The WinlogonInit pahse takes 56s. in this phase the Loginscreen is shown and the service manager starts the services and applies the group policies and this is your issue. <notification type="CreateSession" sessionId="1" startTime="20499" endTime="44996" duration="<strong>24496</strong> "><br/> <subscriber name=<strong>"GPClient</strong> " startTime="20499" endTime="44994" duration="<strong>24495</strong> "/> As you can see, the group policies takes too long. Which settings do you apply? And the PostExplorerPeriod (loading of all startup applications)takes 25 s. So remove unneeded tools from startup (AutoRuns/msconfig.exe) André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Thanks for the reply! I have moved both my computer and user i am working with into a test OU and blocked all inheratance. I have reinstalled windows 7 fresh, installed the network driver and then joined the domain. I tested logins and i am still having the same issues, with no group policys applied. It was a little quicker to log in but we are still looking at around 30 - 45 seconds with no policies applied. I have uploaded the gpsvc.log to my sky drive. http://cid-7a34135c4595b502.skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?resid=7A34135C4595B502!105

I have no experience with Group Policies. I can't check the cause of the issues."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

If the issue occurs with a new installed Windows 7 computer, I suspect this issue is related to the server side as well. Please also go to Windows Server Forum for help: Windows Server Forums Hope this helps. Thanks.
