Extremely slow file transfers on home 802.11g network
Hi, I have a home network with only two devices (plus the router) on it. The first is a laptop, the second is a desktop/media PC. My issue is that when I try to transfer a file from one computer to another - the transfer is terribly slow (transfer speeds rarely go above 1Mbps). I know that we can't expect wireless transfer rates to be as quick as advertised by the manufacturer, but this is just way too slow - especially when you consider that I can download files from the internet (on the home network, through the same router) at > 2Mbps. So, while I'm very confused by what the problem could be, I'm pretty sure it's not a signal strength issue (and am leaning more towards a PC issue rather than a router issue). I've looked online and seen people suggest disabling Remote Differential Compression and Windows Meeting Space (which I have done on both computers) - but my problem continues. Does anyone have any other suggestions? The setup is as follows Media PC Windows 7 Linksys AE2500 Dual-Band N USB Wireless Adapter High speed up to 300 Mbps http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/adapters/AE2500 Laptop Windows 7 Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN High speed up to 300 Mbps http://www.intel.com/products/wireless/wireless_n/overview.htm Router Linksys E4200 Dual-Band N Router Firmware up to date. Version 2.0.37.131047 High speed up to 450 Mbps http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/E4200 Also, I'm copying files from one PC to the other via a mapped drive. I'm not using homegroups. Any thoughts/comments would be extremely appreciated. Thanks! - Enrique

If you have any Anti virus software installed, it would scan any file you transfer. please check if your Av scan or not.. www.zon-ze.com

Thanks for the suggestion - but I've tried that (e.g. turning off the AV software) before a transfer and have had no discernible change in speeds.

Sorry I wasn't able to use computer for a while that's why I couldn't come and help. how you connect your wireless, are you using g only or mixed? Is your router capable to do g only? Also, are you using WPA2-personal? try that wireless only g mode and if you are using web key, change to wpa2.. hope that help you figure.. www.zon-ze.com

Hi. Sorry - I was not notified that you had replied. To answer your questions, I am using WPA2-personal and am using g mode only as well. I've been reading a lot about this problem and it sounds like it could be a Windows 7 issue. I've come across many posts from people with very different set-ups who have encountered similar issues. Have you heard of anything like this? - Enrique

Hi, I suggest you try the actions below to troubleshoot it. 1. Change another channel of WIFI. 2. Use non-password Connection for temp test. 3. Disable Firewall and try Safe Mode with Networking to eliminate 3rd party causes. Juke Chou TechNet Community Support
