External drive issues
Foolish me, I thought MS had FINALLY got it right with Win 7 after using it heavily for a week. Then today I started having issues saving/copying files to an external drive that I've been using successfully with Win 7 for the last week. I found a post somewhere about using a 'takeown' command - I tried it and it tells me that I can't do this since I'm not an administrator. Oh wait, but I AM an administrator!!! So what the heck is the problem? Why must MS do idiotic stuff like this every time a new version of Win is released? I spend more time trying to fix/get around the issues that THEY cause (not to mention all of the change for the sake of change items where they move things around and change what other items are called) and that THEY refuse do fully document/explain than I actually SAVE time trying to use PCs.Mike

Hi, Can you write down the detail symptom when saving or copying files to external drive? Is there any error message? If so, please capture and upload it for research. At this stage, I suggest you run restart the machine to Safe Mode and verify whether the files can be transferred to external drive successfully. Thanks, Novak

I'm going to have to post here every time I encounter a problem, as it's not consistent, even performing the same task from the same application, and at this point I don't really recall the different error messages I've received under different circumstances. Since I just had one occur, I'll post. I was trying to copy files from the PC hard drive to the external drive and the error indicated that the disk is write-protected. Then I employed a tactic suggested by a co-worker - unplugging the USB cable then plugging it back in. After I did this the copy was successful. I employed the same tactic Sunday when Word would not save a document. Don't recall the exact error message - as I alluded to above, I've received different error messages performing identical tasks. I'll make note each time it happens and post here. Thanks Mike p.s. I just received a new external drive - a second drive that I had just died, which is why I have 2 in the first place - and it will be interesting to see if I have the same problems with a drive that has never been touched by another PC. The drive I'm having issues with was formerly attached to an XP Pro based PC.

Hi Mike, Please use "Error-checking" tool to check the external disk when the error message pops up again. Meanwhile, if there is any update, please post the error here for research. Thanks, Novak
