External USB HD and e-Sata not found in MY COMPUTER
Problem as above. I have read all the posts I can find. W7 7000 up and running I plug in a USB HD. I hear the BEEP Drive fails to show up in MY COMPUTER I see it in the DEVICE manager I go to DISK MANAGEMENT. there with NO drive letter I assign a (add) a letter Drive still not in MY COMPUTER hit REFRESH NO help UNPLUG USB -plug back in Drive now in MY COMPUTER and can be accessed. Drive has data only NO SYS Remove drive Shutdown W7 Startup W7 Plug in USB Drive.. Same problem NOT FOUND Repeat the above to use the drive I thought when I first installed W7 the USB HD was found I just tested an EXT E-SATA drive - it shows the SAME problem A USB CD/DVD device is found and works. Suspect a problem in V7000 with external HD management. No hot swap of USB or e-SATA I can use the EXT drive but have to do the above work around - real pain. If I BOOT W7 with the drives plugged in and running, they are found. I 'may' have 'hacked' a control parm in ?? but I cannot find in my journal where I did anything to cause this problem. Of course ALL the external drives are found in XP PRO SP3 including e-SATA. Hot swap works fine

Hi, The situation is a little confused because of your title says "doesn't work" but the post says "they're found". You said "I plug in a USB HD" - "I hear the BEEP": I wonder if this "beep" was coming from your motherboard You should check the firmware of your devices and see what's going on into the BIOS.

I thought I made the problem clear. The BEEP is the USB connect BEEP from the audio speaker NOT the MB The HD all 4 work in XP PRO Nothing wrong with FIRMWARE The HD cannot be accessed by the system ..that is not in MY COMPUTER The DEVICE MGR does see it To get the HD accessible I have to jump though the hoops in the DRIVE mgr. add the drive ID letter. As I explained above, then the drives all work just fine. The USB and e-SATA 'hot swap' function does not work for an EXT HD. A BIOS problem -dont think so - the HD would not ever work nor be seen by the DEVICE mgr. I cannot find anything n the BIOS that would effect this. I did SOMETHING to the system - hacking around - registry or a system file? HOW DO I KNOW THIS I installed V7000 on another HD After install , W7 came up, before I performed any other action - I connected the USB HD, The system found it and I could access it THEREFORE I did something. I have gone though my journals and cannot find where I hacked something?? I need a super tech to offer advice as where in the REGISTRY is this controlled. OR I can reload V7000 OR I just live with it until I can get a copy of the offical RC

I have a USB adapter and if I attach a hard disk, I have to reboot for the disk to be recognized. The one I have has SATA, ATA and mini-ATA connectors so it can use any disks that need to be attached. My SATA disks are flagged as removable suggesting eSATA assumed for disks. Not a problem as I see it. When I open the BIOS the disk is there and I could boot it if I wanted to. So I do not know why your disk is not working uness there is a problem with the hardware. Windows 7 will likely fix the reboot problem with a new build once something is released.IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Whatever I need a new web server, the antique IBM 300GL has a 137GB disk limit, for my chess site. RogerR-7 - You could also try the"In Place Upgrade" trick. By that, you insert the Win 7 DVD, boot from it and whe prompted, do an upgrade that installs Win 7 on top of the existing installation. It will your existing apps installed and will keep your data intact. It may fix whatever happened to the system that's causing your issues.

It worked. It does leave a few large files behind AS it appears to an upgrade of W7 to W7 that is it backs up the old W7. It did fix the problem. The system knows when I pug in a USB drive. However the e-SATA did not work? I did copy back my backup and I am back to where I started. I am going to clone my current system to another HD and do it again. I did not there were some install issues. A few programs kept trying to install and could not find the file in the TEMP folder. But at least I DO know for sure I messed something up with my highly tuned ( hacked) current version.. I just cannot leave the base install alone. I run tuners tweaks and other system stuff as well as reg cleaners.. so I sure some of my hacking caused this :) To bad I just cant do a re-install like I have done with XP Thanks

Keep in mind Windows 7 is still a beta so there are bound to be a few kinks here and there. The RC will be around eventually and it should adress a lot of issues. My own system has 99% of drivers built-in so I do not see many of the problems others report. Vegan Fanatic - Agreed - it's likely a driver issue preventing him from seeing the eSATA port.

I had the a similar problem with my SATA drive that Vista is installed on being recognized as hardware but not being assessable through Windows Explorer (I do a lot of file assessing this way). So I followed the suggestion of using Disk Management to assign a Drive letter...and lo and behold! my disk became an assessable Drive. Thanks.
