External Speakers do not make a sound

I bought a new computer, which has installed Windows 8.1 on it. I plugged in the speakers and a window popped up saying new hardware. Before on windows 7, windows found the speakers automatically and installed what it needed to play the sound. So I thought the same with windows 8.1.

But still no sounds from speakers, I have tried going in and searching for new hardware, windows 8.1 found no new hardware, nor are the speakers listed in the hardware listing.  So I tried unplugging the speakers and Windows popped up, stating speakers unplugged.  The sound is turned up

The speakers are on with power.  I tried another pair of speakers, and again it said new hardware, no sound from new speakers either.  I have checked the volumn control the speakers and in the computer both are turned up.

What can I do next to get the speakers to work?

More often than not when a device isn't working it is because the driver has become corrupted. Re-installing a fresh copy should help
