Explorer crashes when right-click

Hi,

I've just starting having real trouble with Windows Explorer in Windows 8.  Whenever I right-click on anywhere in a local file, or right-click on a local drive, Explorer freezes. I cannot even create a new folder without Explorer crashing.  As I can't right click anywhere, I can't take ownership of the folders to confirm that this isn't a permissions issue. I'm really at a dead end with this.

I have seen that people have had a problem with this in the past when right-clicking on items in the left-hand pane in Explorer, but this problem is much more widespread, as it is affecting every local folder. I followed the advice given in previous posts. I downloaded ShellExView and disabled each item of the Context Menu type that was non-Windows in turn to see if that solved the problem. I then tried disabling all items that were non-Windows to see if that would work. Neither worked and I still have the problem.

The technical details of the error from the Action Center are below:

The only thing I have changed today is that I have uninstalled and reinstalled uTorrent as it was having a problem. Otherwise, I haven't changed anything in months, and this problem has only started today. I only discovered it when I was trying to create a new folder to save uTorrent into!

I have also tried running fltmc.exe from the command prompt as an administrator, which prompted the following results:

Hi,

Windows Explorer crashes are mostly caused by an incompatible Shell Extension.

please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer_full.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it. If you can't do this, run regedit.exe and import the registry file there!

When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the dump file (compressed 7z or RAR to reduce the size) to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see which Shell extension is the cause.

After you generated the dumps, download and import this regfile:

http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer_full_uninstall.reg

to stop the dump creation.

The Windows Explorer behavior when you use mouse or keyboard should be the same. The issue you described can be caused by third party programs or Windows Explorer add-ons.

You may boot in Clean Boot Mode to troubleshoot

http://support.microsoft.com//kb/929135

If the issue occurs in Clean Boot Mode, you may use ShellExView.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

Run ShellExView, in the pane sort the entries with manufacturers. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. We could narrow down it one by one.

Arthur Xie: This is a bull**it response to a true problem & you should be ashamed that you continually put it on these threads like it's an honest solution to anything.

For anyone else unfortunate enough to have this problem, I've been on call with support for this issue more hours than I care to admit. They had me convinced it was a faulty driver from AMD causing Explorer to crash. I ended up doing everything they suggested countless times with different tech's to no avail. The problem (for me at least) is that Explorer isn't crashing on every right-click, only so ofter. So you get on the phone with a tech who says, "Try this. Ok now right-click..no crash? We solved it." only to have it crash 15 - 20 minutes later. This is a legitimate issue with Win8 Explorer and there's no reason why a fix couldn't of been released already.

I really love this operating system & think the programers at Microsoft who wrote it did a fantastic job. There's absolutely no reason something as simple as this  has had to cost me countless hours of personal time as well as time lost working on projects. All because I can't use my main PC for fear of it randomly crashing..this is something that should be taken seriously! I'm clearly not the only customer suffering from this problem and having a moderator swoop in on all of the similarly themed threads to paste in some crap about clean booting & testing each .dll individually is lame.

While we're at it I'm going to throw this one out there too: Why remove the option in Pen and Touch to disable cursor visuals on feedback!? It was in Windows 7 for god sakes and it makes it impossible to paint using any kind of digital input device when you have a stupid ripple effect going out from the cursor every time you click! The core concept of "upgrading" is that you gain, not loose. I had to jump through so many hoops to find a work around for disabling what would of been 2 or 3 mouse clicks in Windows 7. Whom ever decided to remove any kind of Pen/Touch option from your new Tablet friendly OS needs to be slapped..HARD and then have their birthday missed. I'm not a programmer but even I know having the option to do something always trumps not having an option at all. If I wanted cookie cutter I would be on OSX.

EDIT: I stand corrected and apologize for what I wrote above in regard to your suggested solution Arthur Xie. It is good advice.

Arthur Xie: This is a bull**it response to a true problem & you should be ashamed that you continually put it on these threads like it's an honest solution to anything.

In your case, Mallion, since it's very likely something you installed that's causing the problem, it may very well be that Arthur's Clean Boot suggestion would solve your problem, though it's a pretty basic "restore all to defaults" suggestion.

But he is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT that you could use ShellExView to enumerate all your shell extensions, if Andre weren't willing to share his significant talents in crash dump analysis.  As it is, Andre will most likely help take you to a solution quickly.  He's a wizard at this.

Bear in mind that there are those of us who don't have any stability problems with Windows 8 whatsoever (but who still choose to use Windows 7 because Windows 8 just isn't better).  Generally speaking, it's because we're careful about what we install, and we make sure it's compatible with Windows 8 before chancing corrupting the system.

Regarding why Microsoft has removed quite a number of things from Windows 8 - only Microsoft knows.  It seems really silly to do so, but they're no doubt working to some grand plan, however ill-conceived.

No problem, hope you get to the bottom of it.

Remember that after you disable a shell extension, you need to log off and on again to restart Explorer before testing.

  • Edited by 4ndreas Thursday, June 27, 2013 4:48 PM added dmp file
June 27th, 2013 4:37pm

  • Edited by 4ndreas Thursday, June 27, 2013 4:48 PM added dmp file
June 27th, 2013 7:37pm

6.3.9431 tells me you use 8.1 Preview, maynbe you use an incompatible tool. upload the dumps, maybe I can see something.

HI

I have exactly the same issue with 8.1 and right clicking on a object, and try to open or select properties etc

After many hours, off disabling services one at a time after finding it worked when started with no services at all loaded,  , I narrowed it down to and issue with the network components / context menu network links ,I removed any mapped drives and have to start my laptop with wireless off and no network cable,

Once started I can right click no problem  no dlnashext.dll  errors and windows explorer restarting.

then connect network (activate wireless or plug  cable) and everything works ok

So for me in Windows 8.1 only way I can avoid the dlnashext.dll errors on right click  is to start the laptop with NO network connections then connect after log in and all is good works fine no errors.

Give that a go and see if it works for you

I had the same issue. Read about the program: "whatishang". Dumb name, very helpful little program (FREE). Can be found on cnet.com amongst other places.

My problem turned out to be the newly updated AVG 2014. Once I uninstalled it, no more hanging.

I have the same issue (explorer restarting often) using Win8.1 Pro release. Also, I have spend many hours trying to find the problem, to no avail.

Here is a link to my crash dump file:

Meanwhile, since the implication is that your desktop background JPEG image is somehow corrupted internally, change your desktop background image to something else and/or replace that JPEG file.

I looked again and found a 3rd party jpg decoder. Maybe this fixes it

Dear Andre,

Thanks for the info!

I exchanged my desktop background and now the crashes are over :)

May I ask how you are able to extract the information from the crash dump (just curious)?

Thanks and greetings,

Auke

I've used Windbg.exe from the Debugging Tool for Windows which are part of the Windows SDK:

Arthur Xie - Thank you. The directions weren't step by step, but, I finally was able to get to the screen you mentioned and to pin point the program as WinRAR that was causing my windows explorer to freeze when right clicking. Thanks again. (Now when are they going to bring back the REAL start icon?)

I have the same problem. When I installed the latest windows updates, I CANT RIGHT CLICK ON ANYTHING THAT IS ON THE DESKTOP. If I right click, explorer crashes and my desktop refreshes over and over again. Same issue with clicking on the file folder looking icon on the windows taskbar on the bottom of the screen. Anything explorer related just CRASHES explorer. Any right clicking that opens an explorer window CRASHES EXPLORER. This is completely ridiculous.

I am at a loss as well, eggy. :(

December 15th, 2013 4:38am

And since there are a TON of people having the same problem with the RIGHT CLICK on anything and EXPLORER crashes, there should be a windows update that fixes this. WHY should we as the average windows users have to go through all of that registry stuff to fix a problem that isn't our fault. I am quite frustrated. Microsoft, this bug is definitely NOT OKAY.

You have installed software that is incompatible with File Explorer.

That Microsoft allows 3rd party augmentation of File Explorer functionality through Shell Extensions is generally considered a Good Thing.  A whole lot of additional functionality would be closed off to us if that weren't allowed.  Literally, you the "average window user", are wishing Microsoft would close off every part of your system so that it could not be corrupted.

Be careful what you wish for.  You might not like what that would be like.

The fact that you've chosen to install something that crashes Explorer isn't Microsoft's fault.

You imply that it's someone else's job to manage your system.  That's not the case, and no amount of wishing is going to change the fact that the responsibility is on you

This thread gives you a link to the tool (ShellExView) to fix it.  All you have to do is disable non-Microsoft shell extensions methodically, one by one, log off then back on, and test to see if the problem is averted.  When Explorer works again you've both found the offending software and fixed the problem at the same time.

It's now time to go learn a little bit more of how to manage your computer better.  Good luck.

i dont understand why this has only happened when i installed windows 8.1, it was fine before? and thanks for the help, im not great with computers and this shellexview sounds complicated, is there a chance i could accidentally make things worse when using this program, sorry if that sounds like a stupid question.
December 15th, 2013 5:38am

It's possible you installed something in Windows 8 that did not anticipate the changes in Windows 8.1, and is thus incompatible.  To some extent I suppose Microsoft is at fault for encouraging people to upgrade their operating systems in place, without doing a fresh, clean install (which would necessitate installation of your software, at which point you might seek a Windows 8.1 compatible version).

It's really not that good an idea to upgrade an operating system in place - I always recommend a clean install.

But to try to recover what you have, I don't think you can hurt things too much with ShellExView if you disable extensions one at a time, and make sure you re-enable the things you disable if you find blocking them did not help.  Go through it carefully, write down notes if you need, to keep track of what you're doing.

If you get to a point where you're not sure of something, ask.  There are folks here who have been through it successfully who will be happy to help.

Hi, i have followed your steps and everything is now working how it should, although i was unable to find the offending shell extension, i disabled them all and the problem went away, so i enabled them one by one until i had re-enabled them all and the problem was still fixed? could the process of disabling and re enabling the extension have fixed the problem?

Thank you very much for the advice, it is such a relief that i was able to fix it.

edit: turns out that the problem was only temporarily solved, went back through the process and narrowed it down to autodesk inventor.

Your file version is 6.2.9200.16433 and that is this file here battc.sys (File information for update 2770917) I think someone mentioned this before but viruses infect battc.sys very easily or backdoors.

Make sure when doing any update not be running on bat power if idle

You may need to get an updated driver

Hi, i have followed your steps and everything is now working how it should, although i was unable to find the offending shell extension, i disabled them all and the problem went away, so i enabled them one by one until i had re-enabled them all and the problem was still fixed? could the process of disabling and re enabling the extension have fixed the problem?

Thank you very much for the advice, it is such a relief that i was able to fix it.

edit: turns out that the problem was only temporarily solved, went back through the process and narrowed it down to autodesk inventor.

This has been bugging me for quite a while.  I finally sat down and went through my non-Microsoft context menu items one at a time.  It didn't take long before I found that it was FormatFactory that was messing up my context menu handling.

If you'll just go through them patiently, it is unlikely to take you long to locate the culprit.

Happy 2014.

Run ShellExView, in the pane sort the entries with manufacturers. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. We could narrow down it o

Repeat of a prior post:

Read about the program: "whatishang". Dumb name, very helpful little program (FREE). Can be found on cnet.com amongst other places. worked for me.

My problem turned out to be the newly updated AVG 2014. Once I uninstalled it, no more hanging.

Thanks Arthur that worked for me!

I had the same problem.  Turned out it was Norton Internet Security was causing it.  Both my Surface and Lenovo laptop (both 8.1) had the same problem.  Norton repaired itself on the Surface but I had to manually uninstall and reinstall NIS on the laptop.  Both are running great now.

Symptoms:

  • Any right-click crashed explorer.
  • Launching Explorer from the taskbar icon crashed Explorer.
  • Norton IS service would start but I couldn't bring up the NIS control panel.
  • Windows would alert me that no antivirus was running.

Hello guys,

I had this problem of right click and than sometimes windows explorer crashes, so I fell on this topic but hadn't read carefully (stupid me) and I downloaded the reg. file from this third post, and put it in register. Now I rebooted my PC and saw that I can't open My Computer or something else related to Windows Explorer, now I see the reg. was for Windows 8 (I have Windows 7)

Please help me guys, I'm pretty desperate, I searched for the reg. in the regeditor but can't find it.

I suggest using System Restore to restore your system to a point before you applied the .reg file.

Press F8 during the bootup process to access the Advanced Boot Options menu, then select Repair Your Computer.  Let the boot recovery environment load, enter your password, then select System Restore.

Good luck.

Recently I had the same issue after upgrading from W7 to W8.1 and reinstalling some programs that were lost during the upgrade.  Searched the internet and done a lot of things that were recommanded.  But nothing helped.  Also IE11 didn't worked.  And all the preferences were the same as on my second computer.  Google Sketchup could not connect to the internet also.

Finally I removed all Norton related programs with the Norton Removal Tool (https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us) and reinstalled them. And it helped!  For me anyway.  So this is maybe a solution.  Remove your anti virus and internet secure programs and reinstall.  Best luck.

I was having this same problem for months and it as driving me nuts.

I found a solution in another thread though. Apparently its a problem with the shells, so I downloaded shellExView from CNet an disabled anything that wasn't from Microsoft, the problem for me was a shell by Norton. So As soon as I disabled that I was able to right click on files as before without my entire desktop crashing. The think all the potential culprits are highlighted in pink. Another thing I did to narrow down my search was sort by date, and uncheck anything that was highlighted pink, dated around the time I remember starting to have the problems.

I also ran the SF and DISM commands prior, but they wont fix this type of problem.

I hope this helps.

Thank you. I ran ShellExView, which showed no suspicious context menu extensions at first sight. I saw SpyBot S&D listed between those, and realized that that was a recent install. I started that, and in advanced settings I uninstalled Windows Explorer integration. That helped.

Just recently had this problem running Win7 Pro on a 32-bit machine. Googled "right click crashes explorer" which led me here. Perused all of the above. Downloaded and installed ShellExView as per Noel's suggestion. Adjusted settings to hide all Microsoft extensions. Clicked on "File Created Time" to order remaining listings from most recent down to most dated. Knowing that the familiar extension sources for most of the non-Microsoft listings have never in the past interfered with context menu functionality, I focused on the top of the list. Sure enough, there was the NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension mentioned by Waning Gibbous. Disabled it. Logged off and on again, no problem. Just to be sure, shut down and booted cold and tested the right-click issue once again. Solved! Thanks Noel and MS TECHNET forum.
