Explorer Freezes during copying Files to USB Drives
I have a problem with my Windows 7 64-bit: I use several USB - Hard Drives (external) to store Video Files. I experience massive problems when using them with windows 7, especially with large files (> 1GB): it regullarily happens that the copying process stops responding in the middle. Eventually after some minutes i get a message "File not Found" (but it is still there), most times nothing happens. If i want to cancel the operation, it sometimes just isnt possible (i have to use the power button), and if it is possible, the computer is extremely slow and in the resources monitor i find the cpu usage is at 100% - but there is no process showing that produces that usage. That happens when writing onto an USB Drive, and even more often when copying from one USB - Drive to another.I have 4 different drives, it happens which each of it.When i run the system with Windows xp (Dual Boot), i have no problems whatsoever.Just a bug or is there any chance i can fix this myself because it is somewhat annoying ...Thank you for help !

Maybe, you should manually reinstall drivers to your external usb-drives, which are provided from Microsoft Update.Another issue - sometimes drives formatting can fix this problem.

Use the send feedback feature to report this. Sounds if you have an insect or two.

I'm not sure if you want to get deeply involved with this issue since it's a beta, but one way to pinpoint the problem is to scrutinize your drivers with verifier.exe.Basically you tell Windows to be extra picky with a driver(s) and if it misbehaves even the slightest it will cause a BSOD, if it doesn't, then you can rule out them out. Here's an article describing the procedure:http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=827Just use the drivers listed by the devices in Device Manager and you should be good to go.

Use the free program Process Explorer to peek inside the process(es) and figure out what's locking up. Download Process Explorer from this linkAlso, check your Event Viewer for more details about errors that occur when the lockups occur. Post back with any relevant details and someone should be able to make more suggestions.- John

Thanks for your suggestions so far.Just tried the Process Explorer and had a look at it after the lockup happened again. The copying process was aborted with the message "File not found", i clicked on "cancel all", and had the discribed CPU Usage of about 100%.Well, looking at the process explorer i found all processes idle, but i found "Interrupts" and "DPCs" with a CPU Usage of betwen 40 and 50 % each. So, if anybody wants what to make of this, I would be very interested ...

So, explorer.exe isn't locking up? Have you checked your Event Viewer for details/errors around the time that this happened?I'd be most inclined to suspect the compatibility of your chipset drivers as the primary factor in this - but that's just a guess on my part. Try installing the latest available version of the chipset drivers for your motherboard to see if that helps.- John

No, explorer.exe isnt locking up. It eventually pops up the discribed error message or i can also cancel the operation.Just had a look at the event log - ok, there are thousands of warnings when the copy process starts. I try to translate because my windows is german:First, there are about 3 or 4 warnings Source "Disk", ID 51, "Bei einem Auslagerungsvorgang wurde ein Fehler festgestellt. Betroffen ist Gert \Device\Harddisk4\DR5" In English that should be "Error Event Writing on HD" or something like that. Then there is another warning, source "volmgr", ID 57, "Die Daten konnten nicht in das Transaktionsprotokoll verschoben werden. Mglicherweise sind die Daten beschdigt." Which means "Data could not be written in the transaction protocoll, maybe they are corrupt" or something like that. And those 4-5 warnings repeat each other every 5 seconds untill the time when i cancelled the operation.Btw, I use a MSI K9N Neo V2 with a Dual Atholn CPU, using the lates Vista Chipset Drivers (64-bit). My System is on an IDE Disk, I have 3 more SAST Disks and 3 External USB Disks. I have no problems with my internal HDs.So, any ideas ?

another thing ... the external USB Disk stays active after cancelling the operation (Light is red which means it is in use) and i found no way of stopping that (except from power off)

W7 would freeze and not allow me to write to a 8 Gb flash I had formatted in NTFC on another machine.(Not that I know that was the reason )By changing permissions of the flash drive to full control that resolved my problem.
