Explorer Crash/Refresh when trying to Run As Admin or Right Clicking

is there any changes before this issue happen?

try to run at safemode with networking to isolate 3rd party issue

if everything normal there, most likely this is 3rd party software issue, do clean boot and uninstall Norton using Norton removal tools to test

if issue still persist at safe mode with networking, I suspect driver issue

regarding internet, I suggest you check whether other device connected also having the same issu

regarding Norton I suspected Norton installation crash or need to updated (it launched yesterday)

regarding Mozilla I suggest update to latest version as well

Hi guys,

I've been looking for days for a solution and have come to the end of my tether.

Basically here is the problem:

Norton Internet Security has stopped working and will not launch when I try to open it.

Mozilla Firefox stopped connecting to the internet.

Whenever I right click on something and then press Run As Administrator, my desktop freezes and then refreshes. I can move a folder over to one side of the screen, then after the refresh/crash it would have moved back to where it was originally. It also does it when I left click on anything on the taskbar.

I have also run Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes and Nortons Online Antivirus. Nothing there.

I have checked the event viewer and found the following error:

- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
  <Provider Name="Application Error" />
  <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID>

  <Security />
  </System>

  <Data />
  <Data />
  </EventData>
  </Event>

I had another one too but it has seemed to have disappeared, it was something to do with TLS error code 40.

This is extremely annoying as Norton isn't up and running and I'm relying on Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Please upload your event viewer logs and run a system file check

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM if you are on win 8 or higher
All instructions are in our Wiki article below...
Should you have any questions please ask us.

System file check (SFC) Scan and Repair System Files

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:

Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post * If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do Press Win+"R" and input regedit
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

I can't run anything as administrator so doing the (SFC) & DISM is a no go unfortunately. I am currently trying to reinstall Norton I will let you know if it works. I don't recall doing anything or changing anything before the problem started...I just seemed to notice it if that makes sense?

Quick update then guys,

I have managed to uninstall and reinstall Norton, that looks pretty good now.

Mozilla is now reinstalled and has access to the internet.

Now that Norton has been reinstalled I am able to run CMD as Admin.......not sure what link these 2 things could of had but it seems to be working. I will run the scans recommended and post the logs ASAP.

Hi JasonSmith88,

As you mentioned, after reinstall the Norton, you could right click and run as administrator. Did this for all or just Norton? Could you access others by administrator without any crash like Explorer?

If so, it sounds your problem is resolved. It might because Norton modify some system files.
