Event Viewer Online Help Problem
When I select Event Log Online Help while in the Event viewer, the system navigates to and opens the system32 folder. It does not go on line. I am using Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. By default, Event Log Online Help redirects to Events and Errors Message Center. It seems that the path of MicrosoftRedirectionURL is incorrect. Please look into the following registry and modify the URL path: 1) Click Start and type: regedit in the Search box. 2) Open Registry Editor and find the entry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EventViewer 3) Double click the MicrosoftRedirectionURL and change the path using: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp The above link navigates to Events and Errors Message Center. If the issue persists, you can use the following URL instead: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/ee_basic.aspx Now you should open Event Log Online Help correctly. Hi Dale, Thanks for the response. The MicrosoftRedirectionURL was set to the first url and I tried the second. It still opens c:\Windows\system32 when I select Event Log Online Help. Any other thoughts? Thanks Paul

I did some additional research and found that this issue is present on every new Acer Apire 5251 that I looked at. I purchased it from Walmart and went to a number of stores to check their display models and they all exhibited the same behavior. I have E-mailed Acer's technical support so we shall see.

Hi Paul, Additionally, please run SFC /SCANNOW to automatically repair the system. If the issue persists, please perform an in-place upgrade. In-place Upgrade is a special upgrade process to repair the system. In-place Upgrade will not affect settings like photos, movies, documents, etc. that are saved on the computer. Moreover, In-place upgrade doesn’t require activation again. 1) Perform a clean boot in the current operating system. 2) Insert the Windows 7 Installation Disc to your DVD-ROM drive. If AutoPlay pops up, click “Run setup.exe” directly. 3) Click “Install now” on the “Install Windows” screen. 4) In the “Get important updates for installation” screen, it is recommended to select the first option to download latest updates for installation, if Internet access is available. 5) Check the box “I accept the license terms” to agree with the installation license and click “Next”. 6) In the “Which type of installation do you want?” screen, click “Upgrade” to perform the In-Place upgrade. 7) Then, follow the wizard to finish the In-place Upgrade process. Dale, I did a SFC/ scannow and an in-place upgrade to no avail. I also did a complete restore using the factory restore partition on the computer and the problem was still there. The issue must be an error in the image Acer is using to install the operating system to their computers. I also did a clean install with a retail copy of Windows 7 and it worked as it should. I received a response from Acer that I would need to pay for any asistance in this area since they claim that the free help is reserved for hardware issues. I have been trying, without success, to determine the path the software takes to send the Event Viewer error date to the internat. I you know what I might try, I would appreciate it. Thanks Paul

let me remind you of your Answer to this thread My OS SUCKS I suggest you contact ASUS since it is a new computer. They have the support responsibility and should be able to help you. What you are experiencing is not typical of a Windows 7 computer, in my experience. substitute ACER. hope that helps.

I don't need to be reminded of my answer. I did contact Acer to no avail. I indicated this in the post above. I was hoping for some technical guidance from those who subscribe to his forum. I do not consider this thread answered.

After much effort, I have discovered that a third party program, Egis Tec Shredder trial version, part of the MyWinLocker suite installed by Acer, is the cause of this problem. After uninstalling this program, the system functions normally. I also downloaded a new trial version from the Egis Tec site, but that version caused the event viewer online help to do nothing at all. I have contacted Egis Tec and Acer. Thanks Dale, for your responses. Paul
