Event ID 2011 - Source srv - irpstacksize too small - While accessing shared folder on Win 7 from Win XP
I'm getting the following Error message repeated many times in the System Log of Event Viewer on my Windows 7 x64 Professional system. The full text of the error message is; Log Name: System Source: srv Date: 04/02/2011 09:38:50 Event ID: 2011 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Gandalf Description: The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this parameter. These error messages seem to appear in the System Log when I try to access a shared folder on the Win 7 System from a Windows XP SP3 Pro system. On the Win XP System I get an error message saying "Not enough server storage is available to process this command." The following Forum Question seems to start off talking about this issue but ends up totally off topic and doesn't answer or solve the issues I'm seeing: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/6573c5f7-7c61-4c4d-bd04-0f55518ecbeb This error ONLY occurs when trying to access a shared folder on the Win 7 system FROM the Win XP System. It doesn't happen when accessing the share from another Win 7 System or a Win Vista System. The Win 7 system is running ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus (version 4.2.64.12 - the latest version) and the in-built Windows Firewall. The error occurs whether the network connection is via wired LAN or WiFi Lan, and I have tried changing the network switch as well as an alternate WiFi Access Point to no avail. Any suggestions as to how to solve this issue would be most welcome. TIA Jonathan. The Win 7 System is a Dell Vostro 1700 notebook with 4GB RAM an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 Processor (2.50GHz). The Wired Lan card is a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and the WiFi card is an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN card.

Hi, According to your description, this issue may occur if the IRPStackSize registry entry on the server is set too low. Also antivirus software may cause this issue. I suggest removing your antivirus software, then try to edit registry on your Windows 7 by these steps below: 1 Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 2 Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters If the IRPStackSize entry is not present in this subkey, follow these steps: 1) Click Edit, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 2) Type IRPStackSize, and then press ENTER. Note Type IRPStackSize exactly as it appears. The value name is case sensitive. 3 Click IRPStackSize, click Edit, and then click Modify. 4 In the Data Value box, type a larger value, and then click OK. Note: You’d better backup your registry before you want to change it. Hi Leo, Sorry for the delay in responding to your posts. I would like to clarify a couple of things first off. I have two Windows 7 Professional Systems; 1). My Primary System, a Dell Vostro 1700 running the x64 version of Win 7 Pro and 2). A Netbook System, an Acer Aspire ONE running the x86 version of Win 7 Pro. I also have a Windows Vista Business Edition x86 system, on a Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook. My wife's system is a Win XP Pro x86 SP3 System on a Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook. Both the Windows 7 System connect to my home network via WiFi (802.11 N) for them both. The Win Vista System connects via Ethernet (10/100 integrated controller). And my wife's Win XP Pro x86 System connects via WiFi (802.11 G). It is ONLY my primary system, the Win 7 Pro x64 system, that exhibits the problems explained in my original post. When trying to access shared folders on this system from a Windows XP Pro x86 (SP3) system I get the IRPSTACKSIZE too small error and am unable to browse the shared folders from the Win XP system. For both the other two systems, the Netbook with Win 7 Pro x86 and the Win Vista x86 system, I can see and access shared folders, on them, from the Win XP Pro system with no problems reported. I am talking about an exclusively peer-to-peer networking environment, there is no domain controller or actual Windows Server System in my network setup. All four systems run the same Anti-Virus software, namely Eset NOD32 v4 (v4.2.64.12, using appropriate architecture versions for each Windows system) and all use the built-in Windows Firewall which has Fle and Printer Sharing enabled for the Private Network. My Home WiFi network is set as a Private Network in the Network and Sharing Centre. Neither of the Win 7 Systems are joined to a HomeGroup as I prefer to use the older Sharing System. My Wife's Win XP System also uses the Windows Firewall and has File and Printer Sharing enabled in the Exceptions List. The only difference between the Win 7 & Vista systems is that the Windows 7 Pro x64 System has Windows Live Essentials 2011 installed, the other two systems do NOT have that. Even on the Win 7 Pro x64 System the only component of the Windows Live Essentials 2011 that is installed is Windows Live Mail. I have just taken a look and compared the 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters' Registry Entries for all three systems. The Win 7 Pro x86 and Win Vista Business Edition x86 Systems DO NOT have the IRPStackSize entry listed under Paramaters, while the Win 7 Pro x64 System has the following entry IRPStackSize > REG_DWORD > 0x00000014 (20 Obviously this seems to be the key difference, along with having Windows Live Essentials 2011 installed. I'm fairly certain that the errors started appearing around the time I installed the Windows Live Essentials 2011 software, in October 2010, but since my wife doesn't try to access shared resources from her Win XP system on a day to day basis, I can't be 100% certain of this correlation. I do remember seeing a forum post somewhere, not on this forum I think, that suggested a link between these errors and Window Live Essentials 2011, but I can no longer find that forum or post. I wonder whether Windows Live Essentials 2011 created the IRPStackSize entry? Have you seen anything that might show a link, Leo Also to what do you suggest I change the IRPStackSize Entry to in my Win 7 Pro x64 System? Or can I safely delete it completely? Hi, I have searched a long time but failed to find the relationship with Windows Live Essentials and IRPStackSize registry key. I also install Windows Live Essentials 2011 on my test machine, and doesn’t find the IRPStackSize key created entry. If you want to confirm the key and Windows Live Essentials, you can go to Windows Live Solution Center for further help. Since this issue appeared after install Windows Live Essentials, you can try to remove it to see if the same issue occurs. And if you are worry about change or delete IRPStackSize registry key, just back up the registry first. Hi Leo, I've tried my own experiment with a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Virtual Machine (in Oracle VirtualBox) and like you found that installing Windows Live Essentials 2011 didn't create the IRPStackSize Registry Entry. After doing that, I decided to delete the entry in the registry of my primary Win 7 Pro x64 system to see what happened. Since doing that yesterday afternoon, I've seen no adverse effects in any of my installed software and I can now access shared resources on the Win 7 Pro x64 system from Win XP and Win 2k Pro, neither of which was possible before. One interesting side effect I've noticed is that when I open the "Network" icon from the desktop of the Win 7 Pro x64 system, the window is populated with the network contents much more quickly than it was doing previously! I guess the IRPStackSize registry entry was having more effects than just preventing Win XP from accessing shared resources. One quick question to end with, what is the default value for the IRPStackSize in Windows 7. The articles you linked to in your 1st response above, give the default values for Win NT 4 and Win 2k, but not for Win XP or later. I'm wondering whether the default value is the same as it is in Win 2k or has it increased in each new version of Windows since then? The problem entry on my system had a size that was considerably larger then the defaults given in the KB articles, so I'm wondering what value is assumed by the LanMan Server if there is no explicit IRPStackSize entry in the registry? Hi, Based on my researched, Windows 7 has not IRPStackSize Registry by default. That used in Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Hello I am having a similar issue this just started a few months a go but it is still persisting to be an issue and is preventing the client machines from accessing shared folders over the network. Server is at a remote location and clients connect via Citrix and VPN. The server is a Windows Server 2003 box and the clients are Windows XP with SP3. I have tried adding the IRPStackSize entry to the registry and has done nothing yet, I have also increased the IRPStackSize but I stil get the same error.
