Event ID 1007 - DHCP failure - PLEASE HELP!
Hey Folks, Had a virus (Skynet) on my laptop which I was able to remove but now I cannot hook into any WIFI network. I get an Event ID 1007 that says the DHCP attempt timed out and some IP default address was assigned by my laptop instead. I have 3 other laptops that work on my home WIFI system but this one that got the virus is not able to find the DHCP server. I have Road Runner cable with a Linksys router at home. I also tried it on 2 other WIFI systems and with all systems I get the same error - DHCP timeout. I'm using the Linksys Notebook WPC54G WIFI card. I uninstalled the card/system and did a fresh reinstall but this changed nothing. I know it is something in this laptop (Dell Inspiron 600) that most likely the virus did but I just can't find it. What would cause a laptop to request an IP address and the WIFI router (DHCP server) ignore the request but function properly for all other laptops? Thank you for all that care!Chris Just an update on this problem. I installed a sniffer packet trace and found that the DHCP request for address is going out and the DHCP reply from the server is coming back with an IP address. For some reason, the client does not see the reply. My sniffer trace on the client machine sees it and records it but the client machine does not see or process the request. My 2 other laptop have no problem with the reply. Also, I compared the DHCP reply on the other 2 machines that work with the reply to the machine that fails and they are identical. It really looks like the failing machine does not see the DHCP reply even though the packet trace does. Let's see some one figure this one out! Thanks in advance.Chris2 people need an answerI do too

Hi, Chris,I see that you reported this problem about a year ago, and wonder if you ever found a solution. I have much the same situation, but it seems to be more of a long-term and 'pernicious' one, not related to a virus that I know of.From the time I first installed a wi-fi network, I have had trouble with occasional failure of getting a DHPC assignment with one or more computers on the system. The problem was terrible with the first router, a D-Link, then at least a daily occurance on a replacement Linksys unit, and now is only a couple of times a week with a US Robitics router. I have friends who experience the same issue, we all just have become accustomed to power-cycling the router to get all-new assignments, which solves the problem for the moment.Any one computer on my wi-fi network can fail to get a DHCP assignment when it first logs on. I have two desktops, four laptops, a ROKU box and a Wii that access the network. Failure to get an assignment does not seem related to who's on or off at the moment. The wireless adapter says the signal is strong, shows the SSID with no problem, but rebooting the router is the only way to secure a connection. There is nothing you can do from the computer that can't connect... no reboot, no "repair," no logoff and back on.Since friends have the problem too, and the fact that the brand of router seems to have a connection, this seems more universal than your virus-related issue. I wonder if someone can help here.
