Error when trying to create a system image
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a 1tb seagate sata HD and 4gb ram. I am using a Seagate 1TB freeagent for backup. Every time I try to create a system image I get an error. `There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location...... The seagate freeagent is brand new and has 900GB free. My internal HD is only using 253GB 667GB free. The Seagate drives are both fromated NTFS. The backup operation that started at '2010-04-25T18:46:46.311000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348249'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved. Dean

Hi Dean, It seems to be more related to Volume Shadow Copy service error. To resolve it, I would like to propose the following suggestions: 1. Disable the firewall and antivirus, perform a Clean Boot to check if the issue persists. 2.Check the startup type of Volume Shadow Copy service: 1) Click Start and type: services.msc in the Search box. 2) Click Services to launch it. 3) Find the Volume Shadow Copy service and double click it. 4) If it is stopped, change the Startup type to Automatic and start it. 3.Check the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider service in the following registry settings: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\swprv] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{65EE1DBA-8FF4-4a58-AC1C-3470EE2F376A}] @="VSSoftwareProvider Class" "AppID"="{4db9c793-c48d-449c-9754-46027ee45c94}" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{65EE1DBA-8FF4-4a58-AC1C-3470EE2F376A}] @="VSSoftwareProvider Class" "AppID"="{4db9c793-c48d-449c-9754-46027ee45c94}" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{4db9c793-c48d-449c-9754-46027ee45c94}] @="Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service software provider" "LocalService"="swprv" If the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider service is missing, please take the following resolution: 1) using regedit check for the existence of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\swprv . 2) In %winntroot%\system32 regsvr32 swprv.dll 3) Start, Run, C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k swprv (this will load the dll and Recreate the service.) 4) Verify that the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider service is now present and it is set to Manual. 5) Leave the service set to Manual. Third party applications will start the service Best Regards Dale

Thank you I went through all of that and had to load the dll which created the last registry entry. The only thing I did not understand was: 2) In %winntroot%\system regsvr32 swprv.dll I did the rest and still get the same error. Dean

Hi folks, only an addition to the mail thread. I have had the same problem exactly like "deanpw". As you can see from the error message, the system says that the Volume Shadow Copy Service fails. If you check the "volume shadow copy" and "virtual disk" service you will see that both of them is set to "manual" and are not "running". Set it to automatic and start the services. After that please try again to make a backup or a system image. It looks like that on of the the patches which comes over windows update caused this problem bcaue I have had never disabled these services. The following case which is mentioned from another user at social.answers.microsoft.com is exactly the same. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/d7c4a94c-620b-4752-af60-4c65ad1ae334/#ce03930e-f0f8-4893-b49f-3b710fea07c0 Hope it helps. This thread mainly addresses my issue - I created an image 2 months ago and has worked great restoring my computer - but - I wanted to update the image and it will not allow me to. I receive: The backup failed. There is not enough space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. (etc, etc) Well there is LOADS of room, and, I've created one previously... I changed the volume shadow & vitual disk Services to Auto, I have disable virus & firewalls... I'm using Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. I deleted the previous Image thinking maybe it would resolve it but nope. Any additional assistance you can offer would be appreciated please ~ I did not understand what directions Dale Qiao was asking us to do in the registry, and on the upper part he suggested leave the service as "Automatic" and on the bottom he suggested "Manual"
