Error using windows explorer for FTP upload
Hi,I have opened an FTP site using Windows Explorer. When I attempt to copy files to the FTP server, I get this message:An error occurred opening the folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access this folder.Details:The handle is invalidIt is not a permissions issue, because I used my Windows XP laptop to upload the files using the same username and password.Any ideas?Nick

I experience exactly the same! Not solved yet. Anyone?Like I am used to on XP, I open a FTP-site using this syntax:"explorer ftp://username:EMAIL REMOVED"Explorer opens correctly, showing the contents of my FTP server. But, when I try to drag and drop a file, this error occurs.I can create folders though by right-click and so on.From Command Prompt under Windows 7, I can upload using the FTP command. So not a permissions problem indeed, on command prompt and from other OS's I can log in and do the usual business.Maybe it's a real Windows 7 bug?Mark

I can confirm I am also seeing this behavior on Windows 7 Professional x64 with all patches as of October 22, 2010. During a test session I was able to: Start an upload to the FTP server via drag-and-drop in Windows Explorer. The upload triggered a calculating time to upload dialog box. The calculating time to upload dialog box disappeared after a number of minutes and then there was no further activity. This appears to be a defect in the Windows Explorer FTP client. I then tried to delete the folders which had been incompletely created on the FTP server using the Windows Explorer window for the FTP server. The delete operation produced the error reported by nickc1976. I then logged into the FTP server using WinSCP and reinitiated the delete operation. It was processing successfully so I cancelled the WinSCP delete operation and tried again in Windows Exporer. The delete operation in Windows Explorer FTP folder view then completed as expected. In general I am find the Windows Explorer FTP interface to produce odd behavior when I attempt to use it to transfer a large number of files. I have been unsuccessful in performing an upload of 17,084 files (3.99 GB) to an FTP server via Windows Explorer.

I never found a fix for this. I use Filezilla now, pity the Windows ftp client doesn't work, as it is useful for quick copies.

Thanks for the reference to Filezilla. I have adopted WinSCP. Both seem popular and of high quality. For the test case with thousands of files I ended up putting them in a single ZIP file since the FTP protocol doesn't handle large numbers of files very efficiently anyway [http://www.nuxified.org/blog/why-ftp-sucks]. Due to limitations on the server side I was trying to force the large number of files through an FTP transport which is not a very good technique (Rsync or SFTP would have been better). Even with Filezilla and WinSCP out there I would still prefer the integrated Windows Explorer approach to accessing remote file servers. I had been using the GNOME desktop where FTP and SFTP are built into the file navigation tool and it made for a smooth user experience [http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/nautilus-server-connect.html.en].
