Error using backup application
I am trying to use the new windows backup facility to backup to a 120Gb NAS. It has 73Gb of free space, and the backup application is reporting the size of the backup file to be 816Mb (All Users + System Image); however, it fails after about a minute with "Check backup disc space - The disc that your backups are being saved on doesn't have enough free space".I can write / read to / from the device fine...Any ideas? Thanks

Rob - Ok... Correct me if I'm wrong... But don't you think 816 MB is a wee bit small for a full and complete system image - even with compression? Think about it for a moment. The Windows 7 DVD is about 2.4 GB for the 32 bit version and about 3.5 GB for the 64 bit flavor. Both expand when you install it to somewhere in the realm of around 7 - 8 GB depending on what you're installing it on. Even with the best archiving technologies out there (ZIP and RAR), you're not going to get files being knocked down to 10% of their original size consistently. Picture files (.JPG, .PNG, etc...) are already compressed and don't generally compress much. EXE, DLL anddriverfiles may get compressed to a smaller state - but not, on averge to being 10% of their normal size. Text files, on the other hand can and do get compressed rather nicely - but how much of the OS consists of text files?Youmeant something like 8.16 GB for the backup image perhaps...? I'd check the permissions. Make sure that the user that is running the backup - it could be SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE has the rights necessary to write to the NAS.

Wolfie - Thanks for your reply. Yes, 8.16 Gb would seem more appropriate for a full image, but 816 Mb was the 'final' figure displayed by the backup application. The entire partition only consists of windows and one or two small applications, so I cannot imagine that it is more than 10 Gb (i'm not on the PC at the moment to check exactly) on the drive. Therefore, I should easily backup to a NAS with 73 Gb free... I have copied files to / from the device, even large files over 4 Gb to test large storage capability, which all works fine. The user and password used to connect to the NAS are stored in my user account, which has not proved an issue. It's interesting, as it seems to create the folder structure on the NAS and populate some small sort of settings or config files deep down, but then obviously fails. Has anyone else been successful with Windows 7 backup (not Vista) onto a NAS? Thanks

Hi,Did your backup ever complete? My suspicion is that this is only the file backup size and does not include the image backup? Could you do the following:1. From the backup troubleshoot options, select 'Change backup settings'.2. Proceed with the same target and select 'Let me choose'.3. Now, if 'Include a system image' option is checked, which I think will be, please note down the list of volumes that it shows. For example: System Reserved, (C:)4. Start 'Computer' and check the used space of each of these volumes. Let me know if the size still fits the backup disk. Else, you will need to make more space on the backup disk or just stick to file backups. Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]
