Error report closely followed by scam phone call.
Hi all,4 to 5 days ago, I allowed my systemto make an Error Report after a glitch which made Windows close down. I've not done this before and have hardly any such glitches.Today, I took a phone call from an Indian call centre telling me they were Microsoft responding to my Error Report. They had checked and found I had a Deadly Virus which they could fix if I agreed used their Advance System Protector. This would eliminate the problems I was having (I am NOT having any continuing problems) and would speed up my PC.I could hardly hear what was being said as the headset/phone line were terrible and I told them so.They said I could sign up to their protection system for 70 on-line and my cyber world would be safer and faster.I said if their software was as bad as their phone equipment, I was not interested. However, my REAL concern is that this was the only time I've allowed my Windows system to make an error report. It seems strange that my error report was followed so closely by this scam call.Did did this company get detail of the error report and of my phone number. Or was this simply a coincidence. Thanks for any input.4 people got this answerI do too

Hi Everyone,Microsoft never calls anyone without a pre-scheduled call back date and time. If someone calls you saying that they are from Microsoft, that is never true. Also, Microsoft does not sell a security software such as Advance Security System. We value our customers and that's the reason why we have the OneCare Safety Scanner and the Microsoft Security Essentials absolutely for FREE! So when someone calls you asking you to buy this or that, do not believe them. It's a scam.Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit is coordinating with the Department of Justice and FBI to quickly resolve such reported incidents.Check this for a successful report: http://blogs.technet.com/b/mmpc/archive/2010/05/28/congratulations-to-the-department-of-justice-fbi-and-microsofts-digital-crimes-unit.aspxI do hope this helps.

I had indian guy call me, called Dave Williams(Not very Mumbai me thinks) with basically same senario as the rest of you. He said he was calling from Dublin, Ireland( i'm in Donegal,Ireland), but when i requested his number he gave me a number based in Manchester, England. He claimed to be from a company called White Troops, acting on behalf of Microsoft. Tried ringing the number this evening for the craic but just got answer machine. Think i'll pass number on to Manchester police to check out. They are from Manchester, they called me up too.. I heard that there are lot of scams going on so i was careful, i checked their credential in google and found they are a software company, I called them up on their number and spoke to one of their managers (Some Tyler, can't remember his full name) He explained that they are not from microsoft neither they are anywhere associated with microsoft, they sell softwares that works on windows platform and cleans and repairs regisrty (i noted it down to varify it form google). three days later i took a risk and purchased their software and it seems to be working ok so far.. after 10 days or so i again got a call from them enquiring, whether the software that i bought is working fine or not and they asked to fill a feedback form so that they can put it on their website (which i didn't). i was confused why they are calling me up, again spoke to a manager and he explained, what i assume was a suitable answer, this is what he said "you know Mr. Lewis, its difficult for a small company like us to get sales in recession so instead of waiting for a customer we approach them through cold calling, explain them the benefits and hope that they will purchase it, that's it"honestly, i am still confused.

You were able to locate a telephone number and speak to an actual person. Such is not normally the case when dealing with scams. Moreover, those running scams usually are not just interested in selling software. They have a much more profound goal which is to obtain remote control over your computer installing keyloggers and other malware to later retrieve your personal information to further their scam.JoelI don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points. I just received a scam phone call from a man from India claiming to be from Microsoft and he was calling to help me troubleshoot the problem. He said that Microsoft received an error report from my computer that indicated my computer could be damaged if I didn't fix it. The number he called from was 442032864554. I knew it was scam though, because I haven't sent any error reports in over a month, and even if I had, my cell phone number should not have be linked to my computer.
