Error regarding File Sharing and Printer sharing (between XP pro and Vista) Help pls.
Hi everyone sorry this maybe a long post! Ok, so we've had a HP slim line pc in our dining room for a while now (running Vista Home Premium) we also have a Belkin Wireless G Mimo Router, which using the adapter the computer connects with no problems to the internet. It also has a HP all in one printer attached to it via USB (reason will hopefully become clear). I recently got a dell pc that's running XP pro and decided to network our home so we could share the same photos and I could hopeful connect to the printer to make things easy we purchased an identical USB adapter and have just the standard windows firewalls running for the time being. So I went through all the set up features on both machines making sure the Workgroup name was the same. No problems (I had made sure that the relevant setting in the vista networking centre were on namely; network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing). So now everything has been set up, on my XP machine I can see the vista machine and the shared files but when I come to the vista machine I can see the up one but get the following message: Windows cannot access// NAME with error code 0x80070035 I then follow the screen and diagnose the problem then I get: "NAME" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer. I believe I may have shoot myself in the foot because as soon as I had set up the network (before I attempted to test it) I tried printer sharing and may have adjusted some port location but for the life of me remember how, where and why!! In the properties of each all the boxes are ticked: I.e. Client for Microsoft Networks File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks IPv6 IPv4 or something like that etc... But I did notice that the number of option vary between the 2 operating systems (a natural increase I presumed)! Basically how can I resolve this problem? I probably haven't made it easy but hey!! Preferably I don't want to have to do things like ping IP addresses since I have no idea what that means or how to do it! We're also looking into a network external hard drive for back ups and stuff so would like to have this resolved before we looking into them! Thanks anyone for any help or advice. If you need more specific information I will try and comply to the best of my ablities.

Hello toaster045, Thank you for using the forums. Would you please try the following try following: 1) With Windows Firewall enabled on both computers, go to the Exception tab, and ensure File and Printer Sharing checkbox is checked. 2) Windows Vista uses Password Protected Sharing by default which requires username and passwords on both computers for network sharing. Add the same user accounts on both computers. If you have two or three members using the computers, then add those accounts with passwords to each. If the issue persists, please export the Windows IP Configuration by using the command ipconfig /all on both computers to further diagnose the issue. 1. On Windows Vista machine, click Start, click Programs, click Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. 2. At the Command Prompt window type: ipconfig/all 3. Click the icon in the menu bar on the left, click Edit, then click Select All. 4. Click on the icon again, and choose Copy. 5. Then paste the ouput into your next reply. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Please check the connectivity between the Windows XP-based computer and the Windows Vista-based one by pinging: 1.In Windows XP-based computer, enter Command Prompt and type ping192.168.2.5, the ip address on the Vista machine. 2.Try pinging the XP machine from the Vista machine in a similar way. 3. Copy and paste the result in your next reply. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Try testing the connectivity between the two machines pinging by computer name. 1. In the Windows XP-based computer, enter Command Prompt, and type ping reynolds-PC, the Host name in the ipconfig/all output. 2. Try pinging the XP machine from the Vista machine in a similar way. 3. Because you get a Request Timed Out message by pinging by Computer Name, this sounds like a NetBIOSname resolution failure. You can try enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP as described here. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm In Windows Vista: Open the Network and Sharing Center Under Tasks in the left pane, click Manage Network Connections Right-click on the Network Connection you are using, and then choose Properties. Double-click Internet Prococol (TCP/IP) Click Advanced button Click the Wins tab Click to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, then click Apply and Ok Please check the result and let us know. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Right I followed the steps and enable NetBIOS on both machines, for some reason I then had to go through and network set up wizard on the XP machine and create the new network (keeping the workgroup the same). But no luck still. I can access the Vista machine from the XP but get the same message when I try to access XP via Vista. Although it does take longer for the error to appear. (I.e. the green bar gets about halfway along before I get the message). Any thoughts? I do appreciate your continuing help.

Do you happen to have another firewall program on the either of the computers? If so, what? -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

I have no other firewalls installed on either machine. We're running PC Tools virus& spywaresoftware (on both) and the XP machines running MacAfee Virus Scan Enterprise. I've also just checked and with no firewalls (when I turn off windows firewall) I still get the same problem. I'm at a loss.
April 29th, 2008 5:31pm

The problems is likely McAfee VirusScan Enterprise on the XP machine. Doing a bit of reading onthe program thishas antivirus and firewall protection included. Thank you!!! By uninstalling McAfee (rather than route around in the settings) Vista can access the shared files on the XP machine and I have just set up printer sharing which works like a charm. I might look into a more advance firewall or all in one package in the near future by for now it works. Thanks again for all your help! Great forum!! Toby

Dear Eric:I have tried everything that you sugested in this forum and nothing works. Norton is deactivated and windows firewall as well.I have a 6 computer network:5 pcs on win xp1 laptop on win vista, the only one who wont access other pcs on the network The one with Vista only detects it self in the network. Any other thoughts on where can we start to fix this?Thanx!

Hello sarita8020, Before we continue further to troubleshoot the issue, lets determine if the problem is with Norton. If you are running Norton Firewall, make sure it is properly configured for the local area network, or temporarily uninstall it to see if it resolves your problem. With Norton, you should be able toadd an ip address to the Trusted Zone. For more details, please see the following link below. Hello, So I've got a similar problem. I get the same error messege from my Vista when I try to access my XP. I have McAfee, which I just barely installed, and it has an extra feature called McAfee EasyNetwork version 2.1. I've gone through all my Firewall Settings to make sure that it wasn't the reason that I was getting the error messege, but it showed on the network mapping that it trusted my other laptop. So what I don't understand is why I'm having the problem. I ran through the steps that have been listed so far, but no luck. Any thoughts? Thx, Victoria
