Hi, Try to export the following registry entry from a good Windows 7: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore And then import this registry entry to your problematic Windows 7: Note: please backup your registry before performing this operation. Reg import Hope it helps. Alex ZhaoPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Exact same problem. Installed SP1 today (Mar 1 2011) via Windows Update and now when I double-click on my C:\ or D:\ in My Computer, the same error message pops up: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel. Running Windows 7 Professional x64. All other Windows updates had been applied prior to SP1. By way of explanation, now when I right-click on either the C:\ or D:\ the context menu displays "cmd" emboldened as the first (default) option, followed by Search... and then Open. Of course "Open" should be the default option. Furthermore, this "cmd" defaulting only occurs under My Computer; once I am exploring the drives, I can double-click and open folders as normal. Evidently it has something to with the latest Windows update as the same problem is all over the web with no definitive solution. Please advise, thank you.

Would you please upload or paste the contents of the registry entry from a "good Windows 7" so I can merge that into my registry -- I don't have access to another Windows 7 computer. Thank you!

I copied and added your previous answer into the registry to no avail. The problem persists. What else can I do to resolve this? Thanks, I appreciate your assistance.

Although I cannot pinpoint the cause of this error, I ran VAIO Care (Sony laptop) -- which cleans the disks and registry etc -- and everything is running smoothly again. Perhaps the registry was fragmented or temporary files were at the root of this, nevertheless this issue is now RESOLVED.
