Hi Nicholas, thank you for the suggestion but as I already stated chkdsk finds no! error(s).Common for all three machines is the latest Intel Matrix storage Manager 8.9.0.1023.I am now running a test with deactivated write-cache buffer flushing to see if that will solve this error from reoccuring.
November 4th, 2009 7:30pm

ok, deactivating write cache buffer flushing does not have any effect on this issue. I noted a reoccurance of Error ID 55 (NTFS) on one of the machines already.

Hi, Thank you for your update. At this time, please try the following: 1. Ensure that driver for your motherboard (chipset) is for Windows 7 and it is up-to-date. 2. Update the driver for the storage controller you are using (SATA, RAID, etc.). 3. Upgrade the BIOS. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Play it safe & switch to MSEhttp://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ Drew - MS Partner / MS Beta Tester / Pres. Computer Issues This seems to have done the trick. No more Event ID55 Ntfs issues over the past few days.Btw. Avira messes up the taskbar icons as well as avgnt.exe is still listed after removal. Some icons are offset and do notcorrespond with the entries anymore. Ereasing the IconCache.db file does not help. Any ideas? This is the Notification Area Icon list.

Just an update, as opposed to what looked solved was indeed not solved by installing Microsoft Security Essentials.I was able to track down this error occuring only when a affected machine was idle for some time over 30 minutes and one or more network shares were accessed during this time. What ultimately solved the event id 55 Ntfs errors was restoring power options high performance plan settings to default on all affected machines.

I see this exact same error hundreds of times in my eventviewer after playing with the test exe fromhttp://tinyurl.com/w7corruptAs shown on that url you can easily cause the error as a normal application. (But luckily your disk is not really corrupt)

Just came across this thread after encountering my first error 55 on a week old clean install of Win 7 x64 bit. Also have Intel Matrix Storage Manager: Dell XPS 410 Only occurred after I changed power setting last evening from default "Balanced" to "Balanced with sleep mode switched to 'none'. Error occurred only once maybe four hours later while running a CPU intense program that had been preempted by the sleep mode.

My sytem "suddenly" started producing these errors on the win 7 boot drive yesterday and there have been 6 since then. I have run checkdisk several times and it shows no errors. I have Avira Pro anti virus. I have also modified the Power settings but not recently. The drives are set to power down after 15 minutes inactivity. Based on when the errors happened the drive would have been powered up. Two of the errors happened today 7 minutes apart while running a scheduled virus scan (Avira Pro). The Win 7 32 bit system was installed in March 2011 on Sandy Bridge hardware (with the H67 B3 chip fix). I run the free Acronis Disk Monitor and it gets very excited about these things with popups and emails. The disk SMART stats are clean. ADM displays these and also produces a daily evaluation report email on disk health. I'll take no action for the moment and report back as needed.

Just for the heck of it, run Malwarebytes & MBSA Do Check Disc w/ the /r I take it you are staying w/ the Avira, is that correct? Checked for background or simultaenous activity? Any scans running @ the time? Check Event Logs for apps Look @ MS Config Drew MS Partner / MS Beta Tester / Pres. Computer Issues Pres. Computer Issues www.drewsci.com

I ran MBAM and it was clean. I ran MBSA and it complained I wasn't auditing a number of events and that I had my Guest account still active. What a laugh, one part of MS does it by default and another complains about it. I ran CheckDisk several times but it was odd. I have Sandy Bridge hardware using a H67 chip and using the integrated graphics. When I run Check disk because it is the boot drive it runs it in the pre boot stage. At that point I lose all video, the screen goes to sleep and it comes back when it reboots. I cant see what happens with checkdisk while running and I dont get notified after the reboot. I check the event viewer but there is no info in there for running the check disk. I do see some check disk records but they dont cover the ones I have initiated. The times are wrong. The good news is that the problem appears to be fixed. I had 3 of the ntfs 55 errors on 18 June, 4 on 19th and none on 20th. It is now 2300 on the 20th so not much chance for more today.
