Error attmpting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2__Windows XP, Service Pack 3, IE 8__
I am unable to connect to the Internet, getting the referenced and associated error messages after running the network diagnostic. This problem is on the forums in several places, but the suggested fix of running Fix It 50203 only does the job temporarily -- the problem reappears after I reboot. Have also run several suggested commands to reset the Winsock catalog, all to no avail. Any other suggestions?2 people need an answerI do too

I have this same error after removing "Antivir" and a couple of other malware programs, including a root kit. None of the easy solutions have solved this (including the Fix It 50203). I've also tried the System File Checker, LSP-Fix, and anything else I can find that makes sense.I *really* don't want to reinstall XP, as there are several downloaded games that we would lose. HiAssuming that the computer is Now Clean. With XP you can do a refresh install without really touching the current applications and data.Refresh XP Installation. Boot from the XP original CD. Skip the first screen that offers Console Repair, and continue as though you install a New XP.After you Agree etc., the new install screen will come on and would detect the current XP installation.Choose the Repair option by Pressing R for Repair.Use it, would take about 45Min. and you will have a Refreshed Installation of XP while keeping all your data and XP configuration.P.S. If you made changes to WinXP Security setting (Like Firewall special permission), you have to look over them after the refresh since they might revert to the Default. Jack-MVP Windows Networking. Apparently, the computer was not clean. The MSRT, and Avast Anti-Virus missed the one last piece, but the Bleeping Computer site has a tool "Combo Fix" that found it and eradicated it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofixI will attach a portion of the log showing the files deleted, if you'd like to see. It would be nice if the MSRT would find this one... (Going to the formerly infected computer.)
