Still not sure how, but a program got into my computer that claimed hard drive errors and unless I downloaded their software the world would end. So I bought a copy of Stopzilla which claimed it could fix this particular problem. After doing that I no longer have the icons on my desktop and I can't see the libraries to access my data files. The programs are still there if I search for them, at least most of them. If I look at the disk usage it appears that the files are all still on the HD, but I can't see any of them. I do have a backup the Toshiba made a few days ago of the disk, but can't figure out how to install that. Any helpful ideas would be appreciated.

Download and install Malwarebytes . Update and then run it. Then perform an in place upgrade install to restore any missing System files. Jerry.
