will - Interesting error you've got there... According to MSDN, that particular error code means "Unable to remove the file to be replaced"... Of course, this doesn't exactly make a lot of sense - since you're NOT trying to replace a file with a newer version. But in a sense, you just might be - while the file itself may not move, the attributes of the file have the potential to change.Double check to make sure you're the owner of the folder and it's contents and try it again. You may find the account you're using has Read Only rights.

I didnt explain the problem very well. It doesnt happen all the timebut its annoying when it happens. I am changing the rating for the song ( stars ). Another problem is sometimes when you delete a file, file is still there and if you then try again it says it cant find the file. If you close/reopen the folder the file is deleted. Maybe a bug

It happens when I am listening and when I am not listening. I have about 272 songs that I have culled from a lot of music I have and am now getting anes/rating etc right by amending properties.

It's a permissions issue. Take ownership of the folder containing the song and include all containing items. If you're already the owner, change it to the Administrators group (bear with me), apply/OK and close the properties window. You should now be able to give yourself read/write or Full Control access to the file, which should permit you to make changes to the file properties. You can then revert permissions of the folder/contained items to yourself if you'd like. Edit: I also noticed that I can change file properties using iTunes. Makes me wonder if iTunes isn't preventing FileSystem-level access to the metadata. Food for thought.

will_sut, I think p3psi is on to something re: iTunes - it tends to be pretty greedy with access to your media library. Is there a problem with changing your music metadata from within your media player software?-Alex

I have the same error. But the files are on a server, and I only use WMP or Explorer - no iTunes or so. From the server (as admin) I can do all I want, from an other machine, as admin, I get this error. Quite weird. I can copy, modify, delete files, but not change the MP3 files properties... The user (admin) has ownership, full access to files... what is difference to edit the MP3 properties from editing a file??? And I have the problems with files created from a remote computer: I can rip a CD and store it to the server, and still get problems to edit the properties (in WMP I don't see it as it say it's ok even it couldn't store the changes, quite unpractical!!!) and in Explorer I get this famous error - really strange. when I look at the affective rights on a file, it says I have full control... so what more? Any ideas?
