HI The error code issue may occur if the date and time on the computer varies too much from the valid date and time of the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates that are used by the Windows Update Web site. Open Date and Time by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel , clicking Clock, Language, and Region , and then clicking Date and Time . On the Date and Time tab, make sure that your computer's date and time are correct. If they're not, click Change date and time . If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. In the Date and Time Settings dialog box, do the following: To change the date, under Date , click the left or right arrows to find the current month in the calendar, and then click the current date. To change the time, under Time , double-click the hour, minutes, or seconds that you want to change, and then click the arrows to increase or decrease the value. When you have finished changing the time settings, click OK . Try installing Updates Regards Nikhil

BIOS time & date are same as OS. I had earlier tried the method 4 given in KB929458. It didn't help. I typed regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s in the windows serach box and pressed enter. It didn't ask for admin password. Same is true for regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s and regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s If I try to run them as as Administrator it is giving some error. To register a module you must provide a binary name ... etc. By the way all this is for Vista.

I have the same issue with a Dell Vostro 230. I'm using Win 7 Enterprise and cannot get auto updates to connect. Date and time are verified correct. I removed symantec endpoint from the device and also executed all the above commands. One other odd thing I notice is that there is not an item in control panel called Clock, Language, and Region. Enterprise had a date/time applet and another for regional / language. In date/time, the options you describe do not exist. I verified that the time is in sync with our DCs and that the DCs have the correct time. What else can I do? Jimm

I resolved the problem, I had the same issue : Code 80072F8F when I wanted to get some updates. I set up a WSUS server with SSL on a 2008 R2 server. You must import your certificate in the same GPO as your WSUS. In your GPO, go to "Windows Parameters" -> "Security Parameters" -> "Public Key Policy" -> "CA trusted root". Import here your certificate that you already export from your IIS on the WSUS server. I hope my english is correct and that will help you.

Every time I try to update windows it shows eror with Code 80072F8F. I uninstalled Mcafee and tried to update, same error occurred. My system clock shows correct time. I recently upgraded from 32-bit Vista Home premium (Dell) to 32-bit 7 Home premium using the Dell 7 Upgrade DVD. I have core to duo Intel T6400 (2 GHz) Processor, 3GB RAM, 128MB NVidia Graphics memory and 250 GB Hard Drive. I had the same problem, however after reading all the replies I didn't have to do any of them. It was as simple as going to the start menu, right clicking on windows update, then run as administrator. windows update box comes up, click to scan for updates and it works! Well mine did, I hope yours is as simple as that!
