Error 815 - can't connect to the internet
A friend gave me their old laptop. It can't connect to the internet. I get "Error 815" If necessary, here are the specs: HP Pavilion dv6700 (specifically dv6736nr) Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 Bit AMD Turion 64x2 (TL-60, 2 GHz) Memory: 2 GB RAM Storage: 220 GB I'd like to do a clean install of Vista, but it didn't come with any OS discs and I will NOT spend any money buying the discs, so I'm forced to find the solutions by manually fixing everything myself. I used my other laptop to download a bunch of malware utilities (SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, Combofix, MGtools, etc) as well as cCleaner to find/delete any virus. I also installed Avast anti-virus software and so far the machine is clean from malware. I think some DLL's or some other OS system files got deleted, thus the reason for not being able to connect to the internet. I need help though. I went into the Device Manager and tried to uninstall the WAN Miniport pppoe, but I'm not sure if I was successful or not. Can someone help me?

Hi, Error 815 is an authentication error to the server. It means that your ISP server is not responding. Please boot in Safe Mode with Networking and check if the issue is caused by any third party programs. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, please back to Normal Mode, and then temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall. If the issue does not occur, check the settings in the security programs. However, if the Internet connection still does not work in Safe Mode, the probable causes are that you have not set up your connection properly. Please check with your ISP to make sure you have all the software, computer network settings and router settings needed in order to connect. Hope it helps.Sabrina TechNet Community Support
